A HEROIC former soldier took his own life after returning from Iraq.

Kevin Williams, 29, suffered from post traumatic stress disorder and was found dead at his home in Waterville Drive, Basildon, on March 18.

Yesterday, Essex Coroner Caroline Beasley-Murray came to the conclusion Kevin, who was deployed on a six-month tour of Iraq at the age of 18, took his own life.

She said: “I have come to the very, very sad conclusion that Kevin intended to take his own life.

“I am sure beyond reasonable doubt that he took a telling action knowing it would result in his death.

“It’s quite clear he was much loved and that shines through by you (father Robbin and uncle Ralph Williams) being here and Jennifer’s letter.”

Jennifer Williams, Kevin’s sister, confirmed in a statement handed to the coroner that the suicide did not come as a surprise.

The statement read: “Kevin’s death was a shock to us all and despite the pain of a great loss, we feel it would not be classed as a surprise.

“I think Kevin intended to take his own life and he was obviously upset that his mother was unwell.”

Kevin was diagnosed with PTSD in January, having struggled to get used to being back in civilian life after his stint with the Army. Unfortunately, he failed to attend therapy sessions and was soon discharged.

Kevin was found at his home in March and police were called to the scene. Insp Garry Hills confirmed there were no signs of foul play.

His father Robbin and uncle Ralph Williams attended and issued a statement which read: “Kevin was much loved by friends, family and comrades.

“The family would like to say a big thank you to all that attended Kevin’s funeral.

“All donations from Kevin’s funeral and JustGiving page are going to the PTSD Combat Stress charity.”
