A 10-YEAR-OLD girl who received life-saving treatment at Great Ormond Street Hospital is urging others to host a Bake it Better sale to raise vital funds for the hospital’s children’s charity.

Rhiann Richardson was rushed by ambulance to Great Ormond Street Hospital in April 2017, after experiencing severe headaches and sickness.

She was diagnosed with a rare and serious brain condition called Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM), meaning she had a tangle of blood vessels with abnormal connections between the arteries and veins.

She found out about her condition on the same day as hearing she had qualified for the British Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships in her age group.

Rhiann underwent a pioneering treatment which uses extremely accurate radiation to shrink and eventually remove the AVM blood vessels.

While Rhiann was recovering from her treatment in 2017, she decided to raise money to say thank you to the hospital for caring for her.

She arranged a Bake it Better bake sale at her school, Corringham Primary, and raised over £1,000.

This year, Rhiann, of Stanford-le-Hope, is taking part in the campaign again by organising another bake sale at her school, and she and her younger brother Finley, five, are two of the ‘faces’ of the national charity fundraising campaign.

Photos of Rhiann and her brother and Rhiann’s story, feature on national adverts and in the fundraising pack all bake sale hosts receive.

Rhiann’s mum Rowena Richardson said: “Getting involved with Bake it Better last year was all down to Rhiann, she wanted to help GOSH because the hospital was making her better.

“Rhiann held her bake sale at her school, she organised everything herself and she raised over £1,000. Because of the shock of the diagnosis and everything Rhiann had been through, our family and friends really pulled together to show their support. We jumped at the chance to take part again this year, and Rhiann is really looking forward to her bake sale.”
