A man has been charged with drunk and disorderly and assaulting four officers during the evening in Rayleigh.

The man, 26, of no fixed abode was arrested by the Local Policing Team in High Street at around 9pm on Saturday for being drunk and disorderly.

He was found laying in the middle of the road and being aggressive to members of the public.

The man became violent while being taken into custody by police, and an officer was assaulted while in the back of the police vehicle.

Once he arrived at the station, the man was restrained further and three further officers were assaulted while trying to control his aggression.

As a precaution the male was taken to hospital and whilst there he became aggressive and violent towards nursing staff who were trying to help him.

A spokesman for Essex Police' Castle Point and Rochford policing team, said: "The male has been charged with four counts of assault on police, being drunk and disorderly in a public place, a racially aggravated public order, two section 4 public order offences and common assault.

"After a very long shift, the defendant was remanded into custody."
