A man has appeared at court and denied stabbing a man multiple times, leaving him with injuries which required surgery.

Gary Cogman, 62, of Haven Road, Canvey, appeared at Basildon Crown Court to enter a plea of not guilty to one count of wounding with intent on Friday.

Cogman, who appeared on one crutch and wearing a prison-issued grey tracksuit, was charged with stabbing 43-year-old Matthew Storer, causing him wounds to his hands, back, stomach and shoulder at Smallgains Marina in Point Road, Canvey.

The incident took place on April 21 and police officers armed with Tasers responded to the scene where Cogman was arrested before later being charged ahead of his first court appearance.

Mr Storer was airlifted to the Royal London Hospital where he had to undergo multiple surgeries on his shoulder.

He has since been released from hospital and is recovering from his injuries.

Cogman, who appeared in court via a video link from Chelmsford prison, spoke only to confirm his name, age and address and to enter his plea.

He also confirmed to the court that he understood the concept of credit for early guilty plea.

Several members of Cogman’s family were in the public gallery throughout the hearing to show their support.

A provisional trial date has been set for September 10.

Speaking to Cogman directly, presiding judge Samantha Leigh said: “Your trial date has been fixed for September 10 later this year.

“You understand that you will be remaining in custody until that trial date and explained to you the position of not being able to get you a barrister at the moment.

“Hopefully that matter will resolve itself and the court is aware of what’s going on.”

The trial, which will be held before a jury, will last an estimated four days and will be held at the same court later this year.
