A lorry driver who was found to be three times over the drink drive limit after completing his shift has been disqualified.

David Smith, 51, was stopped by police in his Skoda Fabia along the A127 in Basildon.

He was arrested after just finishing a day’s work as a HGV driver.

Smith, of Beech Hall Road, Chingford was later charged and admitted drink driving at his first court appearance.

He appeared at Basildon Magistrates Court on Friday May 25, where he was banned from driving for 31 months and was given 12 weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months.

Smith has been ordered to complete 180 hours unpaid work in 12 months and will pay a £115 victim surcharge and £85 court costs.

Matt Hine, of Essex Police’s casualty reduction section, said: “When we pulled Smith over we could instantly smell alcohol within the car.

“Worryingly, Smith had just completed a full day’s work driving a large vehicle while intoxicated. Driving any vehicle, especially a HGV, while under the influence can have devastating consequences.

“We would encourage friends, family or colleagues to please contact us if they suspect someone close to them to be driving under the influence.

“You can call us on 101 or Crimsetoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
