THOSE looking for ways to be a bit more active are recommended to take part in the district’s fitness walks.

Maldon District Council runs Fitsteps Health Walks every month as part on an ongoing “Livewell” campaign to support healthy lifestyles and physical activity.

FitSteps is a nationally accredited health walking group working in partnership with the “Heart and Sole” walking groups in Chelmsford and Braintree.

It organises short town and country health walks, longer country walks, historical and nature walks, orienteering trails, and other walking events.

The walks are led by trained volunteers and take place throughout the year.

Ivan Tosic, Fitsteps Coordinator, said: “You can join one of the many free FitSteps Walks going on around the Maldon District. The FitSteps walks are led by trained volunteers, and are suitable for all abilities, from beginners to seasoned walkers.

“The walks range between one and four miles and take place along safe, town and country routes.”

Sandra Down, Volunteer Walk Leader, said: “The FitSteps Walking for Health Scheme involves varied walks at 13 locations across the district and is an easy and relaxing way to maintain fitness and make new friends and is free to take part.”

“The recently introduced Bicknacre walk has proved to be a popular addition to the FitSteps health walks programme.

“Starting from White Elm Garden Centre car park, the walk takes in the quiet Peartree Lane and the picturesque Moor Hall Lane. Much of the walk takes place around the extensive meadows of Priory Fields, passing the impressive arch of the 12th century Bicknacre Priory and St Giles churchyard and nature reserve.

“The walk is topped off with a visit to the popular White Elm Tea Rooms and Garden Centre.”

Fitsteppers should wear suitable footwear and bring waterproof clothing, water, sun bloc cream, own medication and emergency contact number are recommended to take on walks.
