MUSICIANS meet machines this Saturday night, when Figurehead appear at Peggy Sue's live music bar, as guests of Howling Black Soul at their monthly residency at the Leigh based bar.

The Figurehead musicians described themselves as a "songwriting collective", consisting of a flautist, vocalist, guitarist, lyricists, a bass player, keyboard player, percussionist and electro beatmakers, who use live instruments, loops and launch pads to create a freestyle, semi-improvisational set.

Blues rock band Howling Black Soul's bassist Dave Collins, saw some of them perform a stripped down set on Record Store Day in April this year, at Fives Records in Leigh, and described their sound as "magical", before inviting them along to the Howling Black Soul gig as their support.

Figurehead's beatmaker Luke Mersey, from Southend, said: "We are primarily a songwriting collective, interesting in writing and recording songs, working with different musicians. Our line up includes the extremely talented flautist and bassist Lou Woodger, along with Dave Livings who is also a very credible singer-songwriter and guitarist.

"We work by creating a skeleton for a song, and then performing it freestyle, meaning it's never exactly the same twice.

"This Saturday we will be debuting a selection of the material we have been working on, live."

The night begins at 8pm until 1am.

Admission is free.
