STUDENTS at a special needs school took part in a sponsored walk event.

Pioneer School, Basildon held the one mile sponsored walk on Thursday June 14 to raise money for a wheelchair swing.

The event was organised by Pioneer School and Parents of Pioneer.

The mile long circuit which went through Gloucester Park, Basildon was opened by boy band Five singer Scott Robinson who brought his young family along to take part in the event.

Minnie and Mickey Mouse mascots encouraged the children as they started the walk and passed through a balloon arch donated by Once Upon a Balloon. The youngsters were guided along the way by students from De La Salle School, Basildon.

Despite the challenges that face them, 140 pupils completed the circuit with the support of staff and parents. A total of 10 pupils managed to complete an extra mile.

At the end of the race the pupils were given a medal and bottles of water to quench their thirst provided by Freestone Cleaning Company.

Jackie Brathwaite, principal said: "The children did amazingly well, we are really proud of them. We would like to thank Scott, parents and families, De la Salle pupils and other supports for the huge support they gave to make the event successful."

So far £3000 has been raised towards their goal of £8000.
