ORGANISERS of Southend’s Colourthon are gearing up to raise thousands of pounds for charity through their popular annual event.

Around 800 people have already signed up to walk a half marathon route in the Moonlight Colourthon or 10k in the Twilight option.

Both start at 6pm in Chalkwell Park.

Julian Hart, event co-ordinator, explained that participants can choose to walk for any charity they choose.

Some of this year’s good causes include Havens Hospice, Kingsdown School and Southend Hospital Charity.

As the event’s name suggests, walkers are encouraged to dress as brightly as they can.

Meanwhile, charities can set up stalls on the day to raise awareness of their work.

Julian said: “Since our first Colourthon 12 years ago, we’ve raised £1.5million for 726 different charities.

“Our original target was £25,000 so we’re over the moon with how it has progressed.

“All of the organisers are volunteers, who put the Colourthon together in their spare time.

“So it’s a lot of hard work, but it’s always worth it on the day.”

The event is organised by the Moonlight Colourthon Charitable Trust on behalf of the Southend Round Table on a not-for-profit basis.

Julian said: “The beauty of the Round Table is that it’s a group of like-minded individuals who have a range of different talents. So when someone suggests an event like the Colourthon, there are lots of people who can put their talents into making it a success.

“It’s great for our own personal development and gives us a real sense of achievement.”

If you’d like to take part in either the Twilight or Moonlight Colourthon, sign up online at www.colourthon.org by Thursday, July 5. Alternatively, you can enter as a lone walker or join a team by 4.30pm on the day.

There will be competitions for best costume, most money raised and the biggest charity team.

The Colourthon costs £20 to enter. Visit the website or call 08448 028508.
