A PENSIONER had her credit card stolen as she tried to get cash out of an ATM machine.

The woman, in her sixties from Chafford Hundred, was at the cashpoint at Tesco in Signet Way, Lakeside, when the theft occurred.

As she waited to get money out of the machine, a man approached her from behind. He pressed the button to eject the card, grabbed it and ran off.

The crook was Asian, aged 30 to 35, 5ft 6ins tall and of thin build. He had dark eyes, a goatee beard and wore a grey hoodie.

Witnesses to the theft, which happened at 10.50am last Friday can contact police at Grays on 01375 391212.

Tesco should have a duty to it's customers to protect people using the machines within their property by installing working security camera's at cash points, and having security guards so that these thieves don't get away with it.

i dont think its silly "ME" tescos install the machines so they should also have some sort of security system aswell, i hope that the lady involved is ok after her ordeal x

I see the 'blame' culture is ripe and prevelant again. How can this be Tesco's fault?? They are just trying to provide a service for their customers. Do you now advocate a guard for each and every ATM countrywide? Like most things - you use them at your own risk!

Isn’t this a racist crime then?

Will the police pour thousands of man-hours into this case?

Will our local MP Angela Smith and a couple of C-list celebrities hold a ‘community’ event to raise awareness of white women being attacked by Asian and black thugs in Essex?

I think not.

I guess there must be far too many white women around anyway for that New-Labour fascist Smith.

Tesco have the machines there so it is more likely that you would use their store. So yes, I would expect a security camera to be in use. What's wrong with that?

People, you need to read the comments properly before jumping down throats!

Also, I'm not suggesting a guard should be standing by a machine, Where did I say that????. I am merely saying it would be nice to know that one was around should something like this happen.

Of course Tescos is to blame. I went into Sainsburys in Southend the other week. Once I had done my shopping I exited and crossed the road. I was almost hit by a car. I'm suing Sainsburys for not providing someone to help me cross the road outside it's store. Come to think of it, I'm also going to sue Tescos in Westcliff as the bin outside was full of litter and the sight of it gave me stress. I'm still waiting to hear about my case against the Virgin Megastore, I'm suing them for playing music.

Chortle, chortle - trouble is, you're not too far away from the truth!

Mike, This would only be a racist crime if the women was robbed because she was white.

I think the correct term is "racially motivated crime" which is self explanitary

Tesco is large enough that it should position its ATM inside the store somewhere near the checkouts so if an incident occurs Tesco personnel could initiate an instant lockdown of the store. For all of you out there (and me too) the lesson is simple, never, never use an ATM that is outside of a building, and this included outside of a bank. Only use those that are inside where employees can see you.

hardly much use if the store is closed!

Im more concerned that the woman was withdrawing cash using her credit card... does she know how much interest they charge? thats the real robbery here!

How would you know that it wasn’t racial motivated?

How do you know that he wouldn’t have robbed her had she been black or Asian?

If the boot were on the other foot the police would have immediately ASUSEMED that a white robber targeted a black women because of the colour of her skin.

The question is why does this only cut one way?
Is it that in New-Labour’s Britain a white woman is not as important?

By the way, after the Stephen Lawrence Enquiry, any person can make an incident ‘racially motivated’ simply by saying so. This is a fact and check for yourself if you want to.

This means that if this women that was robbed by an Asian, had said that she felt it had happened because she was white, the police would then HAVE to treat it as racial.

I wonder what would have been their reaction if she had?

I’ll leave that up to your imagination.
