Football fans watched in pubs and homes across south Essex as England confirmed their spot in the quarter finals of the World Cup.

The team went all the way with Columbia, yet emerged victorious after winning 4-3 on penalties.

Although the young group made it hard for themselves due to a last minute equalizer from Columbia and Barcelona's Yerry Mina, the team showed grit and character to book their place against Sweden in Saturday's quarter final.

Will Davies, 32, from St Lukes Road, Southend was in The Alex in Alexandra Street when England confirmed their place.

Recalling his feelings during the penalty shoot out, he said: "When Henderson missed I was like oh here we go again.

"My heart shattered.

"But when Pickford come out with the new hand of god the buzz was unreal and I was confident Dier could step up.

"The scenes in The Alex were just mental as you could imagine.

"T-shirts were off and beer was being thrown.

"Everyone was just buzzing, it was an incredible feeling."

Videos from across Basildon, Southend and Canvey show the reactions of England fans as Eric Dier's dispatched the winning penalty.

The Haystack in Furtherwick Road, Canvey is expecting more of the same after England's victory last night.

Trudy Garner, owner of the pub, said: “It was an absolutely fantastic night and the atmosphere was electric.

“People were still dancing in the street way after it had finished. “We’re expecting pretty much the same for Saturday’s game.

“Both bars will be open and we have the biggest screens on the island.

“It’s lovely to see all Canvey residents celebrating the win together.”

The Corner Club in High Street was also full of celebrations when the final penalty was scored.
