PUPILS were given a break from the pressures of social media with an outdoor learning experience.

The aim was to promote online safety and show there is a real world out there rather than just the virtual one online.

The event was held at Waterman Primary School, the Boulevard, Rochford.

Pupils and staff took advantage of the summer weather and outdoor learning space to develop communication skills in mixed age groups.

Headteacher Eileen Thorn said: “We recognise the importance of online safety in the ever evolving virtual world.

“We also value the importance of developing friendships and recognising the difference between the real and virtual world.”

Pupils were encouraged to be active outdoors and enjoy being active recognising that fun can be had away from screens.

Activities included problem solving in forest schools, developing new playground games to add to the choices available at lunchtime and finally some outdoor storytelling activities with added drama.

The pupils participate in regular “forest school” sessions in the outdoor classroom to try and bring variety to the teaching at the school.

More events about online safety are planned for the future to teach children to stay safe online and not expose themselves to risks.
