A man has been found guilty of burglary with intent after he tried stealing a cash machine from a shop in Dunmow.

Phillip Pardoe, 32, of The Hyde Langdon Hills, was found guilty at Chelmsford Crown Court today, Monday, July 16, after a trial.

He also admitted the theft of a motor vehicle used in the incident.

Luke Scott, 31, of Takely Ride, Basildon, admitted burglary at Chelmsford Crown Court on Tuesday, March 20.

They are due to be sentenced at a later date.

A third man was found not guilty of burglary.

At around 2.05am on Sunday, April 2, 2017, Pardoe and Scott arrived outside Co-Op in Flitch Green in stolen vehicles.

They smashed the store window, entered the building and put a chain around a cash machine and a Land Rover Discovery.

They then tried twice to pull the machine out of the building but they failed to move it.

They then abandoned the Land Rover nearby, before leaving the area in a BMW X6 that was found abandoned in Beaulieu Park, Chelmsford, after it was spotted by police.

Scott was found by a police dog hiding in some bushes where he claimed he was sleeping, however, he was wearing the same clothes seen on CCTV.

Police then linked Pardoe to DNA found in the vehicle.

Investigating officer DC Greg Najdan, of Braintree CID, said: “Scott and Pardoe had been in contact prior to the incident and agreed to target this particular shop and cash machine.

“They drove stolen vehicles to the scene and were unsuccessful in their attempts to take it and after getting disturbed they drove off.

“Scott was found following some superb tracking from a police dog and he was arrested. We then linked DNA found on a smoked cigarette to Pardoe.

“Despite Scott admitting his involvement, Pardoe continued to deny the offence and the destruction and damage he caused to a local business within our community."
