CHRIS Powell was boosted by Southend United’s spirited showing in Sunday's 1-1 draw against Leeds United at Roots Hall.

Harry Lennon headed the Shrimpers in front midway through the first half before Luke Ayling equalised for the Championship club.

But Powell felt there were plenty of positives signs from his side in their first home pre-season friendly of the summer.

“It was a good work out and I’m really pleased with our play and our application as well,” said the Shrimpers boss.

“Leeds started brightly but we settled into it and started to get going.

“We scored a good goal and set pieces will be important again this year.

“It was a poor goal we gave away to be honest because there were too many mistakes from us and we also gave it away cheaply at times but it’s still pre-season and we will improve.

“We performed well in front of our own fans and I’m pleased with the progress we’re making.

“We’re just under two weeks away from starting the season now and we’re still building slowly but surely.”
