A CHARITY and high school have teamed up to help young people give back to their communities and speak out for causes they believe in.

First Give and Southend's Southchurch High school have joined together to allow pupils at the school to dedicate time and effort to chosen charities through social action, with one class winning a grant of £1,000 for their charity.

The whole of Year 8 took part, and students created presentations about their charity and in classes planned and carried out fundraising.

The chosen charities were Trust Links, Harp, Dove, Vineyards and Southend's foodbank.

The Dove centre, which provides advice, drop in sessions and support for victims of domestic abuse came away with the £1,000 prize after the winning team was chosen by a judging panel, including Mayor, Derek Jarvis.

Stuart Reynolds, headteacher, said 'I was delighted to host an event that was so well supported by the school's students, staff and parents.

"Our students worked extremely hard researching their chosen charity, promoting their social issue and raising funds.

"All students were winners, but the team that impressed the judges the most were outstanding, informing the audience about the important work the Dove Centre provide.

"The whole event was a huge success, made even more memorable with special guests the Mayor and Mayoress of Southend; I would like to thank them for their support."
