A road was closed for more than six hours after a man climbed on a ledge to avoid police.

Police had been called at 7am yesterday to reports a man wanted by police had been spotted at an address in Chancellor Road, Southend.

When they arrived, the man climbed onto the window ledge and refused to come down.

Officers closed Chancellor Road for the man's safety.

Access to the Royals car park and the Seaway car park was blocked.

A spokesman from Essex Police said: "We were contacted with reports that a man wanted by police had been spotted at an address in Chancellor Road, Southend, today, Monday, July 30.

"We attended the address and the man climbed on a window ledge at around 7am.

"After engaging with the 34-year-old man, he was arrested at around 1.30pm on suspicion of breaching his bail conditions.

"He remains in custody for questioning."
