VISITORS to Brighton Museum’s Gilbert and George exhibition have been inspired to produce their own cheeky and X-rated pictures after seeing the show.

The exhibition includes naked self-portraits, images of the artists standing in their own bodily fluids and two giant images of penises.

The work has clearly sparked the public’s imagination with dozens of saucy images left behind by visitors at the feedback area of the show.

The show has been on display since April.

It has also sparked conversations from visitors who have drawn their own versions of the artists’ work, self-portraits, images of genitals and added interesting comments.

Illustrator David Shrigley, who was the Director of this year’s Brighton Festival, also completed a card which read: “these young men may have a future in the creative industry,” with a small drawing of a poo.

Brighton Museum’s Fine Art curator Jenny Lund said: “The show has clearly inspired many people to create their own art or leave a comment.

“Some of the drawings are quite graphic while others have a saucy seaside postcard feel with people clearly enjoying the freedom to draw a rude picture.

“We’ve also been pleased at how well received the show has been.

“Some of the images by Gilbert and George can be challenging but the overwhelming reaction from our feedback board has been positive.

“It seems Brighton visitors are not easily offended and have loved the show.”

Gilbert and George are a Turner Prize-winning artist partnership, who have created art and shared their lives together for 50 years.

They set out to challenge the distinction between art and life.

They explore universal themes including sex, faith, and identity.

The images will also be featured during Titillate.

This is an event organised by The Museum Collective, who are a group of artists under 25 who have got together to produce a series of art shows in response to the exhibition.

They will present a free evening of drink, dance and dirty doodles inspired by the Artist Rooms Gilbert and George exhibition.

Titillate started on July 26 and the show runs from 5pm.
