SOUTHEND United new boy Shawn McCoulsky wants history to be repeated tonight.

McCoulsky - who has joined Blues on a season-long loan from Bristol City - scored twice at Roots Hall in the first round of the Carabao Cup last term while with Newport County.

And the 21-year-old would love a similar success against Brentford tonight.

“It was a good night here with Newport last season and it would be good to have a similar one again because I’ve come here to show the fans, the manager and everyone else that I can score goals,” said McCoulsky.

“I want to do my best for the team and hopefully I’ll score a few goals to help the team push for promotion.”

McCoulsky - who was on the bench for the Shrimpers at Plymouth Argyle on Saturday - spent last season on loan at Newport County.

And he is happy to have made the step up to League One with Blues.

“I like the style of play here,” said McCoulsky.

“We had a meeting yesterday and the team play some very good football.

“League One is another step up for me after being in League Two last season and I want to carry on from last season.”

McCoulsky scored 11 goals in 13 starts while with Newport before a heart concern brought his loan spell to an end.

But the striker has now been given the all clear by the medics to resume his career.

“It feels great to be back because the heart condition was a shock for me,” said McCoulsky.

“Everyone treated me very well during a difficult time and it’s been a rollercoaster few months.

“But I’m fully fit now and I want to kick on and show what I can do.”

And McCoulsky will be aiming to do that with the Shrimpers.

“I was supposed to go to Doncaster but I had my last scan which they didn’t wait on so that fell through and I chose Southend in the end,” said the striker.

“Hopefully that will prove to be the best decision and I’m pleased to be here.

“Under-23s football isn’t really the same as men’s football and as long as I’m playing men’s football then I’m happy.”

McCoulsky will be in the squad for tonight’s cup clash and boss Chris Powell is pleased to have him available.

“Shawn trained yesterday but he’s finding his feet,” said Powell.

“He’s got pace and an eye for goal. He’s progressed and we’re hopeful he will make an impact and do well here.”
