Proposals to revitalise the high street are being investigated with the authorities and businesses set to meet at the end of the month to discuss plans.

Afterwards a consultation will open, and residents will be asked for their input.

It is understood up to £5 million could be invested in the plans.

Rob Ely, of the town partnership, said: “Braintree’s stock is at rock bottom at the moment, but it is going to go up.

“The reason things haven’t been done before is to make sure it is done right.

“The council do not want to chuck money at it and then realise down the line they’ve made the wrong choice.

“I genuinely believe within 18 months to two years the high street will be revamped.

“Personally I think it should be pedestrianised and we introduce benches and trees.

“It may cause trouble for delivery drivers, but we could end up with something very special in five or six years’ time.”

Braintree Council is understood to prefer full pedestrianisation of the high street.

Councillor Tom Cunningham said: “As part of our plan to make Braintree a better place, to develop the street markets and because we often hear about residents’ concerns over the paving and cobbles, we are going to look into the possibility of pedestrianising the High Street.

“The first step will be asking residents what they think of that idea.”

A spokesman for Essex County Council, said: “We remain committed to working with Braintree Council to realise key improvements needed in the town and are exploring a number of different options which will benefit residents.”

The meeting takes place on Friday, August 31, at Braintree Town Hall.

Plans for pedestrianisation have been explored in the past, including most recently in 2016.
