IT HAS been 250 years since circus began and the occasion is being marked with a tour by one of the best known troupes – Zippos.

Comic clowns, daredevils, master equestrians and acrobats join together in the ring to show their skills in honour of English showman Philip Astley, who invented this form of entertainment back in 1768 on an abandoned patch of land in London’s Waterloo.

Zippos is currently wowing the crowds in the Big Top at Hove Lawns and will be there until August 28.

Ringmaster Norman Barrett, 82, also known as Lord of the Ring, said: “I’ve been with Zippos for 18 years and I joined the circus world when I was 25. I am the first generation in my family to be in the circus. After all these years, I still enjoy what I do.”

Totti the Clown, real name is Totti Alexis, 36, said: “I’ve been part of the circus world since I was four years old. My parents were performers.

“Zippos travel worldwide, for us the travelling is normal. I’ve never slept in a house before, only a hotel.

“The circus remains the most popular art in England. Although it’s been around for 250 years, it’s constantly evolving.

“I’m developing new acts, gags, stunts and I play several music instruments.

“In my profession, we observe human life and try to find the funny side of it. We do a lot of investigative work.

“My children were born in the circus and they travel with me and my wife. This is my first time in Brighton and I’m loving it here.”

Aerial acrobat performer Paulo Dos Santos, 34, also a mixed martial arts champion, said: “I am originally from Brazil and Zippos brought me to the UK.

“It is my dream come true to perform and live in the UK.”

Vicky Garcia, who performs with her husband Pablo on their Space Rocket acrobat feat, said: “We love Zippos and the circus life. Our children Connor and Antonio do acrobats.

“It’s a great opportunity to see the world.”
