A POPULAR cafe on the beach is set to be rebuilt after it was burnt down by arsonists.

Plans for a modern building for Shoebury East Beach were approved at Southend council's development control committee.

Ron Price (Con, Prittlewell) was delighted the cafe would finally be returned to the site replacing the previous wooden cafe, which was built more than 40 years ago.

He said: "I'm sure everybody wants to see the cafe back at Shoebury as I do.

"I think this is a wonderful opportunity for someone to develop that site. Somebody could do very well there."

Conservative councillor Patricia Rayner, whose Shoebury ward takes in the site, said: "I haven't heard of anybody who doesn't want a cafe back there.

"I would ask that this is pushed through as soon as possible."

Excellent news. It's a travesty the former corporation loading pier isn't going to be used for a similar purpose. Open your eyes wider, Southend Council.
