Thank God Philip Miller has the imagination, financial committment and confidence in developing ventures on Southend seafront.

He really has shown how imaginative, traditional family attractions can be run successfully, where others have failed or faded away.

The Adventure Island complex is a vibrant example of his achievement. So isn't it about time he is allowed to do something with the decaying structure that runs through the middle of his empire.

He has every right to complain about the eyesore of peeling paint, windows without glass, rusting ironwork and rotting timbers that has been under the care of Southend Council for decades.

No, it's not the smart Pier entrance, but the sides of the pier structure visible from his theme park.

It's great to see his ideas to light up the area with his new plans over the coming weeks.

Pity he can't light up the hopes and dreams of us pier lovers. We wish he could.
