SOUTH Essex MPs feature the middle ranking as far as expenses are concerned, new figures have revealed.

The highest claim in south Essex was £152,937 by Castle Point Tory MP Bob Spink, who revealed his figures two weeks ahead of the official publication by Parliament.

This is still £30,000 less than the highest spending MP, Dewsbury Labour member Shahid Malik.

Dr Spink said his figures reflected extensive travel across Europe, defending British Sovereign interests.

He also said travel expenses, particularly by car, were on the high side as trains were not generally running when he was travelling late at night.

Dr Spink also described office expenses as an essential part of his work as a constituency MP working on behalf of everyone in Castle Point.

Billericay Conservative MP John Baron had expenses totalling £151,050, making him the next highest spender.

He said: "We get something like 50 letters and telephone calls a day as well as e-mails which have to be answered. To provide the best service as a constituency MP you have to employ staff and it is easy to forget by far the largest amount of an MP's expenses goes on staff salaries."

The 2005/6 claim by Rochford and Southend East Tory James Dudd- ridge was the next highest locally at £143,809.

Mr Duddridge is currently away from the country on parliamentary business and could not be reached.

Southend West Cons- ervative, David Amess, who was a high spender locally last year, is now in the lower level of costs at £137,781.

He was away from the office when the Echo called and was not available for comment.

Basildon Labour MP Angela Smith, who is also parliamentary secretary to Prime Minister Gordon Brown claimed a total of £136,038.

She said: "I am always concerned when these are said to be our expenses as none of the money is going into my pocket.

"There is the rent of a constituency office and staff so I can do the best possible for those who live in the constituency.

"Postage levels may be high but this is a large constituency in terms of population and I try and do the best possible job for all my constituents and answer or deal with problems as quickly as possible."

The lowest local spender was Rayleigh Tory MP Mark Francois with a total of £127,843.

He said: "There were rumours earlier this year that MPs would no longer be publishing their expenses. That is false."

The shadow minister for Europe added: "I hope I provide good value for money for my constituents.

"I will continue to do the best I can for them in the constituency and in Westminster."

Lets see if a nurse, policeman,or fireman get £30,000 a year then Essex could have nearly 10 more of each for the amount of expenses that Essex MP's claim. Who would you rather have? By the way "defending British Sovereign Interests" whats that all about.

It's Spink Speak for having a jolly time abroad at the British taxpayers expense.

Since posting my last comment I have re-read this article and would like to highlight some of the ludicrous justification of expenses.I have already questioned what British sovereign interests are. The reporter by saying that Bob Spinks claim is £30000 less than Shahid Maliks somehow makes these massive amounts of expenses justifiable. John Baron says that he can get 50 letters, phone calls and e-mails every day therefore has to employ staff. Wow! such a workload,if his staff are dealing with them whats he doing? James Duddridge away on parliamentary business and unable to be contacted, mmm how is that representing his constituents should they need him? David Amess away from office and the reporter unable to get a quote, having been knocked of his perch as a high spender last year you would have thought he would want to sing about it. Angela Smith is MP for Basildon but is also a secretary to Mr Brown. She says that none of her expenses go into her pocket but if she is employing staff to do her constituency work whilst she does a second job then it does. Oh,also she has pointed out that postage costs are high as if we didn't know. Mark Francois only claimed £127k suprised he could do his job on that low amount.By the way what do they do?

If you had a golden goose, wouldn't you milk it?

There should be independent 'shadows' created to follow these Bozos about for 3 months.

I'd do it for expenses!

I can't believe the ignorance of the comments here. If everyone who worked in an office had to declare the whole costs of running their office every year I bet most of them would cost an awful lot more than most MPs! MPs of all parties work extremely long hours and most work 6 or even 7 days a week if they are actually delivering a proper service. I would be very suspicious of the service being offered to their constituents by MPs at the bottom end of this table as they cannot possibly be doing the casework and dealing with their consituents concerns properly.

We are talking over £150K here. How much does a secretary, some post, a few telephone calls and a bit of travel cost. It does appear excessive.

But there again, if it is in defense of British Sovereign interests, then maybe it's money well spent......yeah, right!

It includes the cost of renting the office as well. Plus the equipment. And most MPs need several staff to deal with the volume of casework that they deal with.
