THE 5th Rayleigh Scouts have launched a £5,000 appeal fund to help give future generations of youngsters a permanent Scout hut.
The group, which formed in 1959, runs Scout, Cub and, more recently, Beaver groups, but has been without a permanent home ever since its premises in Love Lane, Rayleigh was condemned five years ago.
Despite this, the group has continued to be a success story, with more than 60 boys and girls attending on a weekly basis.
With the 50th anniversary of the group fast approaching, it was decided that it was high time a permanent base was re-established.
The group plans to stay on the same land, but wants to construct a new building.
Now the leaders, parents and Crouch Valley District Scout Executive Board have committed themselves to raising the funds to start the process of removing the old condemned building and planning its replacement.
The group is aiming to raise £5,000 to get the ball rolling, but believe the eventual figure they will need to raise could be as high as £100,000.
They hope to start work in 2009.
The first of many fundraising events, the 5th Rayleigh Curry Night, was held at the Maharaja Restaurant, in Benfleet, and there will be many more to follow.
