BASILDON Council has unveiled a shortlist of development groups battling to build the £30million sports village in Gloucester Park and deliver the £120million Wickford masterplan.

The council has whittled down lists of four groups vying to regenerate Wick-ford and three to build the sports centre.

The four shortlisted are:

  • Barratt Homes - one of the UK's biggest housebuilders
  • Bellway Homes, which is redeveloping the Laindon School site
  • Community Solutions for Regeneration, made up of Family Mosaic, Morgan Sindell Investments and house builders Lovell, who are rebuilding Craylands and Five Links
  • St Modwen Properties, which is developing four town centre projects in Medway, Kent.

The three groups on the shortlist for the sports village are:

  • DC Leisure Management, which runs 118 leisure centres UK-wide
  • Orion Land and Leisure, which built Cardiff International Sports Village
  • Community Solutions for Leisure - made up of Morgan Sindell Investments, Sport and Leisure Management and S&P Architects.

Council leader Malcolm Buckley said: "They are all high quality, substantial organisations with the clout and calibre to deliver the projects."

What good news for the business community at Wickford Town centre.

The high quality of firms attracted to the regeneration project should give every Wickford resident confidence in Basildon Councils ability to deliver a Town Centre to be proud of.

In the trade Barratt are known as BOX BUILDERS due to the fact that their homes lack any imaginative design and look like boxes. Just what we need in Wickford.

Now let everyone know what your occupation is Mr McClean and then they will understand why you are personally so happy when it comes to over development of wickford. ££££££

Whilst I do not know this Mr McClean judging by the suckup tone of his comments I would like to take a guess at either a council worker looking for promotion, a developer trying to get in on the act or an estate agent about to profit in a bit way should he win the rights to the sale of new properties built by any development winner? am I right? do I win a prize?

Well Done June.

He is an Estate agent, manger of Amos Estates in Ladygate Centre, you know the firm advertising all along the By-pass, trying to sell 173 flats in Lower Southend Road. He is not a Wickford Resident just makes money out of the town.

No I left the message as Chairman of the Wickford Business Association upon behalf of the towns business community.
I organise and fund Wickford Christmas Lights Street Festival for the benefit of Wickford people.

The likes of 'Wickford resident' obviously think that everyone is on the take.

If anyone is trying to manipulate situations for their own agendas it is the faceless 'get real' and 'wickford resident' who no doubt will be members of the local protest group and standing as political candidates in the local elections!

I care only for Wickford not for local fame (like others!)

First of all it is basic business practice to state if you are commenting on behalf of a business association - get the basics right. And it is actually quite funny that the minute any person making profit out of the masterplan is opposed it is suddenly "political" and must be the member of a pressure group. I certainly am not - I am just your average resident seeing my home town suffercated all in the name of profit for the few (mostly estate agents and coucillors). Take responsibility for who and what you are, a non-resident making a big fat profit out of our misery and ensure you inform people not only who but what you do when you comment on their home town. This is typical "not on my doorstep" attitude. Show us a new high street with pedestrianised road, parent parking, toilets, baby facilities, decent parking etc and we will think you work in our interests. So far and for the foreseeable future all you are showing is houses - and how much do YOU make from that personally - A LOT. Giving us a few manky lights at christmas does not entitle you to think you know what is best for us. When you live in the mess being created you can comment - whilst you are just plan profiting I don't know how you got the face to comment. No you dont want local fame - just local profit

I am a member of Wickford Action Group.
See Colin Maclean its not hard to state what you stand for!
I see you at the last Planning meeting with Malcolm Buckley and Tony Ball sitting in the corner and malcolm Buckley had the cheek to say the flats in Market Road/Avenue would kick start the Masterplan! I hope you put him right as you know as well as I do you are selling 173 flats in Lower Southend Road, then we have another 84 in Runwell Road, oh and another 35 on the old fraziers site, 24 in Woodlands Road, 24 above 'New look' 12 at 2-12 the Braodway, have I missed any? You should know you are the Estate Agent.

As far as I know I am the first WAG member to comment on here and I am not faceless and have offered many times to discuss this with you face to face but you will not!

When you and your Councillor mates have finished destroying our town perhaps you will be satisfied because i for one will find you and demand answers.

We stand in Local elections to prove a point, we were always accused of standing for a small percentage of residents but 30% is not a small percentage is it mr Maclean.

The bottom line is WAG care you don't.

And another point Mr MacLean who are the Business Association as far as we know it consistsof yourself an Estate Agent selling the Flats at Lower Southend Road, Ray Ride Runwell Councillor on Chelmsford Council and Director of Bradgate Developments (Wickford) who are building the Lower Southend Road development, Barry Gibbard,Architect of Lower Southend Road development and perhaps one more, am I correct? Hardly democratic is it? If I am wrong then tell us whoi else is involved, I'm Waiting for a reply.

See Mr McClean I told you I was not part of any pressure group or political party. Not everyone that causes you irritation by daring to oppose your greed is a pressure group. When you accept that we are not all mindless idiots in this town you may like to start treating us with a bit of respect. However, your fingers seem to have stopped working. Surely you could at least respond to some of the questions asked by the WAG - even if it is on behalf of the Business Association. I was pleased to read Mr Balls comments because I never realised the Association was such a "closed shop" and all those involved just happen to be either directly profiting in their own personal pockets from all the extra houses and developments or are best friends with those who are. The standard reply to objections is that you (and all the others in the boys club) refuse to talk with political motivated parties etc, most of us normal residents translates as "why won't that lot go away - they are daring to try and stop us and we have no answers to their quite sensible questions - we are scared". And anyway if you and your political friends think the WAGS are a political based party then it is even more reason you should be talking - it is called DEBATE - standard part of politics in the real world.

9:30pm Fri 8 Feb 08

I am still waiting Colin MacLean, if you are shy e-mail me at Balla@btinternet.com and we can discuss the Wickford Buisiness Association and its motives.

Lets tell the residents the truth about what is happening to their Town over 700 flats in the Centre is too many unless of course you are an Estate Agent like Colin MacLean.

Colin MacLean, WICKFORD says...
11:15pm Fri 8 Feb 08

Mr Ball,

Why on earth would I meet you to discuss any aspect of the community work carried out by the Business Association.

Whilst I do not wish to enter into a slanging match with you, I am, as always in awe of your own self importance. You are the spokesman of an organisation with nine members protesting about an exciting regeneration project for Wickford in order to gain a higher profile before the local elections.

Perhaps after May we will hear less from you.

Alan Ball, Wickford Action Group says...
9:48am Sat 9 Feb 08

Mr MacLean

You have not answered any of my questions, Howmany members has the Buisiness Association got? 93 or 4) and by saying everyone with a Business is automatically a member is not the answer, As you quiter rightly say we put candidates up last May but NOT for political gain, so that the people of Wickford are heard.

Over 2,000 rsidents voted for us and we shook Buckley and co, ask him yourself.

We will not go away after May, have we after other Local elections?

Please answer my questions above and you will do well to take note of people like 'get real' above.

I will ask again how many members has 'The Wickford Business Association'

As a member of WAG, and a member of its Executive Committee, I think Colin MacLean should be aware that we have just topped the 400 mark in membership! I suggest that is probably more members than the three main political Parties have combined! I feel that it is interesting that one of the Developers already involved in approved plans for Wickford is on the short list - dare I say the chosen one has already been decided?
I wonder if Councillor Buckley will tell the people of Wickford how many Companies applied and how the short list was decided!

Brian, Wickford says...

I'm not connected with any of these groups but I am listening. From what I'm hearing I don't like. I've lived in Wickford 20 years. This council need to start being accountable for their actions. Wickford Acrtion Group will be getting a new member.

Alan Ball, Wickford says...
7:10pm Mon 11 Feb 08

I'm Still waiting Colin MacLean who are the Members of Wickford Business Association?

I do not want to know anything about the work they do just the committee members names, you know the WAG committee members we are open about these facts, how about you?

Wickie, Wickford says...
4:33pm Fri 15 Feb 08

Mr MacLean

Nice to see you are so proud of a string of lights in the High St. Once the bulbs go these can be replaced. Once Wickford High St is turned into an estate full of flats and no shops, and Barn Hall disappears under concrete, we are stuck with that for generations to come.
The sporting village is at the cost of the local facilities and part of the well used park - will this also mean the end of the 'regenerated' Wickford pool?
The council seem to be selling off everything they own to developers. This can only be detrimental to community groups and the surrounding area.
