Southend High rule cross country roost

SOUTH-East Essex schools dominated when the years seven and eight County Cross-Country Championships were staged at Hylands Park, Chelmsford.

Most successful were Southend High for Girls, who won both female team prizes.

They took the year seven award on 96 points from Brentwood (323) and St Martin's (378).

In year eight the Southchurch Boulevard school won on 83 from FitzWimarc (281) and Southend High B (365).

For the boys Southend High won the year seven award on 88 from Fitz on 186 and Eastwood (191).

But Fitz got revenge in year eight race by winning on 109 from Southend High on 120 and Brentwood (199).

Individually, locals took three of the four first placings.

Eastwood's Rob Frith won the year seven boys from team-mate Reuben Browning.

Year seven winner was K Dodd of Beauchamps with Sophie Riches (FitzWimarc) runner-up and F Brumby (King Edmund, Rochford) third.

T Richardson (St Cleres) was runner-up in year eight boys, while the girls' race in this age group saw another victory for unbeatable Castle View, Canvey, student Jessica Judd.

The Thurrock Harrier won from Southend High's Aimee Garnett.

Year eight boys Individual: 2, T Richardson (St Cleres); 4, A Capel (Greensward) 5, O Kyriakedes (Southend High); 7, A Masterson (Southend High); 8, A Mannering (FitzWimarc); 10, M Hamilton (FitzWimarc).

Team: 1, FitzWimarc (109); 2, Southend High (120); 4, Eastwood (225); 7, Southend High B (395); 10, FitzWimarc B (454).

280 runners from 44 teams took part.

Year eight girls Individual: 1, J Judd (Castle View); 2, A Garnett (Southend High); 6, S Gibbs (Mayflower); 8, J Mead (King Edmund); 9, L Mountford (Billericay); 10, E Johnson (King John).

296 runners from 45 teams competed.

As a result of the races, a host of south-east Essex runners have been chosen for the years seven and eight teams to take part in the Southern Counties Champion-ships for this age group at Basildon's Gloucester Park on Saturday March 29.

Southend High will have 13 representatives.

Year eight: Aimee Garnett, Emily Crow, Sophie Jarvis, Daisy Durden, Annie Harding and Alexandra Morgan.

Year seven:Amelia Knowles, Katie Willis, Blaise Copeland, Ann Luff, Amber Franklin, Alice Casey and Katie Sorrenson.
