BETTER street lighting is needed in the Westborough area of Westcliff, according to concerned residents.

One resident has branded the situation a disgrace and claimed people feel unsafe at night.

Alan Grubb, 61, of Westbourne Grove, said: "With the exception of Westbourne Grove, many of the roads between Fairfax Drive and the A13 have street lighting which is an absolute disgrace.

"We are told street lighting conforms to Government standard, but it is an area which needs urgent action.

"When you walk down Hildaville Drive or Westminster Drive at night and house lights are out you are relying on street lighting which frankly is abysmal. If the roads were well lit then people would feel safer."

Ward councillor for the Independent group Martin Terry agreed the lighting needs improving.

Anna Waite, councillor responsible for transport and planning, said an officer would be sent to check the street lighting, and any residents with problems in other roads should contact her.
