Slipway is danger to public, says port chief

3:42pm Wednesday 14th May 2008

A SLIPWAY used to launch dinghies is in disrepair and could lead to an accident, Leigh Port Partnership chairman Mike King has warned.

Mr King said the slipway on Two Tree Island, Leigh, was full of potholes which could cause people to lose their footing, especially when the tide was in.

He said: "It's got huge potholes in it which are quite dangerous. If you're walking along on it and you can't see what you're walking on, you suddenly find one foot has gone down further than you expected."

Leigh Lib Dem councillor Alan Crystall said the problem had developed as there was no longer a forseshore officer on the island to collect launching fees.

He said: "When people come in motor boats they should pay launching fees and it should pay for itself. Then there would be the income to fix it. But it's been allowed to go into decline.

"The council is losing money and nothing's being done about it. It's a poor stewardship of resources."
