The Echo says only NEW staff have to be HIV tested. Anyone who started with the NHS before 2003 does not have to be tested. Seems wrong...

people are concerned as this involves their own health and the health of their baby, people have a right to worry, even though the risk is so small to receive such news via post was terrifying, we trust in the nhs something like this brings alot of issues to light. Its not about whether you have sex with your surgeon, everyone knows that not the only was it can be transmitted, yes i am sure the staff take every precaution to stop any infection being passed on, but still a terrifying thought for any mother, that her and her child could be infected with HIV. Luckly the results are given very quickly so everyones minds can be put at rest.

Beth has a good point and although not an expert I would suggest it would be very difficult to pass the virus in this manner. You can find more information on the daily telegraph website regarding dates etc..

What is sensational about the way the Echo has published it? It just points out what the situation is. Simple as that.

Yes it must be quite terrifying to receive something like that in the post and I feel for everyone concerned. I am sure Beth was trying to help to take some of the worry away by saying how difficult it is to catch after all should she also got the letter.

Everyone relax. Breathe. The chances of being infected iwth HIV are so tiny it shoudn't worry you at all. HIV is ONLY transmitted via blood, semen, breast milk and vaginal secretions. Unless the doctor bleed onto your open wound or his semen enteredyou duing the c-section, then you're going to be OK.

HIV is NOT spread by sweat, skin contact or spores inthe air. The chances of a healthcare worker, whilst taking standard precautions against bodily fluids, infecting anyone or getting infected is very very low.

Staff who work in the NHS should be checked regularly. My Brother had an operation and then got a letter to say they wanted him to come in and be screened. It is a wonder the Hospital has a lot of infections. In the USA the staff in Hospitals are screened. Basildon Hospital sort these problems out, this is not the first time something like this has happened

Are they going back 17 years then?

this is rediculous. you people should all calm down. do any of you actually know anything about HIV other than your simple predjuices?

it is impossible to catch HIV by simply touching or being near an infected person. especually if that person is robed, scrubbed and gloved as health personell are.

unless they actually bled into your c-section, or you had sex with them during an operation, then the chances of you having HIV are as good as none. Did you neglect to read the expert's view on page 8, where they explained that only 3 people in the world have ever caught HIV from a health worker, none from the UK and none from C-section.. Simple as, stop worrying.

THE IDEA that AMBUSH cures AIDS

My proposal is that I PROVE that AMBUSH CURES HIV/AIDS by giving it to a number of END-STAGE or DRUG-RESISTANT people and the scientific community watches their recovery. This proposal addresses the problem in that I have already outlaid the results to be obtained.

This means that without DIVINE intervention mankind and ALL warm- blooded mammals will be extinct in a number of years.

The PROOF of what I am saying is found in scientific papers wherein it is found that when the protease cuts the viral strands, it cuts it at DIFFERENT lengths EVERY time, to which it should always be a valine at the end but is a different amino acid every time. This is why it is IMPOSSIBLE to produce a VACCINE.

Since this is NOT a hypothesis but there are about 400 individuals who have taken AMBUSH, here lies a vast area in which to check, recheck and confirm that AMBUSH CURES AIDS. Let it be mentioned that during the HIV reproductive cycle, reverse transcriptase converts viral RNA into DNA compatible to human genetic materials. Thus the human DNA has been 'hijacked' and since each person has a DIFFERENT DNA, then the new viral copy is unique to that person which shows that each individual has a DIFFERENT STRAIN of the virus. Consider two HIV positive people swapping viral strains and increasing its complexity with multiple partners.
It can also be proposed that they be revisited as proof that the strain or strains that they had were 'killed' at the time of taking AMBUSH considering that a person can catch as many different strains as there are people who are infected by HIV.
I am also willing to work with the scientific community in identifying those individuals who took AMBUSH and wish to be identified with this process notwithstanding that some are stigmatized while others are jubilant,

Once AMBUSH is verified as being able to accomplish that which is aforementioned then the next stage might be the natural and artificial synthesis of the substance.

Sounds like a script rewrite from an episode of "Love Thy Neighbour." Did we timewarp back to the 1970s?

The question needs to be asked of who is to blame for all of this? Is it the medic for not reporting his condition? Did the medic even know he had HIV? It could very well be that he was unaware. Who knows? Did the hospital know but allow the medic to carry on regardless? Who knows?

Let's have some more facts presented first before everyone gets hysterical. Everyone is jumping to conclusions.

I would imagine the hospitals are panicking as much as this healthworker's patients.

why the hell would you sue when you can't actually catch the **** disease in the first place. people like that are pathetic.

The Hospital need to take steps to protect patients. All staff should get a Health check by the Hospital With all the other infections the Hospital have, this does not surprise me. When will the patients be protected. The NHS should be made to answer to their shortfalls. Basildon Hospital is going down hill.

I know this is terribly upsetting and very scary, but the chances of catching HIV are very very small. Even if someone with HIV stabbed themselves witha needle then stbbed you with the same needle there is only 0.3% chnace of getting the disease. Surgeons are extremely careful with wearing gloves and preventing diseases from spreading- the chances of contracting HIV in this way are virtually nil. I know that it is stuill hard not to worry, but I hope I can reassure some of you a little.

Im one of the mums that got a letter from the hospital. At first i was shocked and thought about nothing all day. I contacted basildon hospital and they made me feel at ease. Went thursday night to see a counseller that helped and then went for a blood test. Ok we have to wait for the results but i going to keep calm and not worry as that will not solve anything. I am going to enjoy the weekend with my husband and my little boy. the chances are very slim. Good luck everyone

where did i state that my last child was born 17 years ago. I may have stated in some earlier post that my youngest child is 17, but that doesnt mean he was my last child does. Hello, i recieved a letter on the tuesday and rang the hospital straight away and they made me feel at ease, i went for a appointment the next day. I just want to say that i dont think it is right what that women is saying about she was explained to,but if you wanted to ask questions you could, we asked ours and they got answered, i think the hospital has dealt with this extrememly well.

Whyare you all talking about c sections. I have just been called and i am 51 years old , never had a c section and my baby is 24 years old, where do i fit in to all this

Amanda- possibly mistaken idenity. There may be two people with your name in your area. Get in touch with the hospital, they should let you know whats going on.
