A PAIR of teenagers have been charged as part of an ongoing investigation into knifepoint robberies in Basildon this month.

The probe relates to offences reported to Essex Police on March 1 and earlier this week on Thursday.

Two boys, aged 16 and 14, have been arrested and charged in connection with the investigation.

The 16-year-old has been charged with knifepoint robbery and possession of a bladed article.

The 14-year-old has been charged with two offences of robbery.

They have since been released on bail and will appear at Southend Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

Chief Inspector Dan McHugh said “Our officers have been working with our specialist detectives to gather the intelligence needed to make these arrests, following the concerning robberies which have taken place in Basildon town centre this month.

“I appreciate that these were concerning incidents to the local community but I hope that these charges provide some reassurance.”

An Essex Police spokeswoman said the arrests were made following proactive work from multiple policing teams.

They include Operation Mantis officers and Basildon Criminal Investigation Department at Essex Police.
