A NEW restaurant and 16 flats are being planned near Tarpots roundabout in Benfleet.

Developers hope to demolish the empty glass-fronted building between Rileys snooker bar and Shaffers arcade in High Road.

In its place are plans for a three-storey complex with a ground floor restaurant, 12 one-bedroom and four two-bedroom flats.

Residents and business owners' views are split on the plans.

Kathleen Stewart, who lives opposite the site, says the proposal will harm the character of the area.

She is worried that the flats will overlook her garden and has concerns over parking and more traffic.

She said: "The children and elderly residents of this area of the High Road and West Green will be particularly at risk."

Jan Arnold, owner of Lasting Beauty in High Road, said: "It's a difficult one because flats are needed for young people who cannot afford houses.

"But there is also a lot of flats being built in London Road.

"From a business point of view if could be of benefit because it will bring more people around to this side of the High Road."

Anyone wishing to comment on the plans needs to contact Castle Point council.

The deadline is July 11.
