CANVEY residents have backed plans to develop a new nature reserve on the island.

Results from a public consultation, run by the the Land Restoration Trust, show residents are backing the preservation of Canvey Wick site of special scientific interest.

Public backing for the 247 acre site, next to Morrisons supermarket, in Northwick Road, means the trust will now push for funding to develop the nature reserve.

The results of the public consultation showed overwhelming support for the plans for a community space or nature reserve.

There was also support for some form of visitor centre and improved public access.

If all goes ahead as planned, work could begin next year.

Jonathan Ducker, from the trust, said: "Canvey Wick is seen as a priority project, that has the overwhelming backing of local people so therefore we are very hopeful the funding will be approved."

From these findings three options have been proposed for the site. These will be discussed by the Canvey Wick Steering Group next week.

The steering group, which includes the Land Restoration Trust, Essex County Council, Buglife and Castle Point Council, will choose the option which it considers to be in line with its statutory obligations, including protecting and enhancing the site.

The group will also be taking into account the results of the various site investigation works, which are virtually completed. Then it will come up with a detailed plan with the aim of securing funding to implement the scheme.

Mr Ducker said: "There is still much work to do in order to ensure we get this right, however, should all go to plan work should commence next year."

Once the funding is in place, there will once again be extensive public consultation and a chance for anyone interested to view, and refine the plans.
