A LOCAL handyman scheme is under way in Castle Point to make sure vulnerable residents feel safe in their homes.

The crime and disorder reduction partnership has paid for a batch of door chains, mirrors and spyholes, to help prevent crime against elderly or disabled people in the borough.

The partnership is working with national home improvement service firm, Anchor Staying Put, which will fit the products for a reasonable price.

Peter Woollard, chairman of the partnership, said: “It is vital our senior citizens and other vulnerable residents are able to feel safe in their own homes.

“We are delighted that this partnership initiative will make a major contribution to their security.”

Bogus callers often prey on vulnerable or elderly people, tricking their way into their homes and offering substandard work.

But a simple door chain can help keep suspicious callers out.
