THE seventh annual golfing fundraiser for leukaemia research went with a swing this year.

Duncan Holland has raised more than £78,000 to date with the day-long event at Essex Golf Club at Garon Park, Southend.

Mr Holland, from Benfleet, started the event in memory of his daughter, Gemma, who died of the disease aged 12, and her friend Matthew Mullins who succumbed to the same illness at the age of 16. They met at Barts Hospital, London, in 1996, while receiving treatment there.

Last year, the event raised £6,000 and Mr Holland hopes to exceed that this year.

He said: “It has been great. We had a good day. We had 28 teams, 16 sponsors and 112 golfer taking part.

Apart from the golf we have an evening event with an auction, a raffle and bingo which are fun.”
