ESSEX is the tenth safest county in England and Wales, according to government crime figures.

The stats show the county recorded just 11 offences of violence for every 1,000 people from April 2007 to April 2008.

The new results table was compiled by personal safety charity The Suzy Lamplugh Trust, which analysed Home Office statistics.

Yet Essex has slipped down from fifth position the previous year.

Tony Adams, acting inspector at Southend, said police had worked extremely hard to reduce crime in the area.

He said: “We have particular officers who target persistent and prolific offenders.

“We also have a regular operation set up to target individuals who are currently at large.

“We are doing our best to get those people off the streets which will reduce the volume of crime.

“We will strive to be the best in Essex and then attempt to be the best in the country.”

But Lord Hanningfield, leader of Essex County Coun-cil, said the statistics were wrong.

He said: “I dispute the figures. I think we are fourth in the table.

“We are working very closely with the police and hopefully within the next three years it will be the safest place in the country.

“The real problem in Essex is not crime, it’s the fear of crime.

“We need to work with the public to make them understand it is a very safe place.”

The Suzy Lamplugh Trust will use the results to help identify people most at risk of violence and help give them relevant personal safety advice.

Angela Smith, Basildon’s MP, added: “Congratulations to the trust for compiling the figures, but this just reminds us to be on our guard for personal safety at all times.”

A friends family members at Morrison got a good slapping of some immigrants who jump past them in the parking queue. When told this was out of order and rude. they were called White tr*sh and slapped. at the o.b.s. the immigrants were released, the family complained and were put in the cells for the night. If this is how o.b. reach their numbers or the fact they give out so many cautions ( bnp leaflet/ figures from thurrock gazette) 2006/7 out of 5,600 offences 2,200 were given.
Do you really believe the figures

Here in Southend most people know the Police won't do anything about reported crime, so they don't bother reportint it - that's why the figures are so low.

I bet the situation will change if Essex County Council do turn off the street lights across Essex at night, like they are talking about in an earlier article today.

No good questioning these figaurs, like any Govenment body in this country, they can massage the figaurs any way they like. I just spoke to a man from South Africa, who could not understand why workers in GB do-not have protection with their personnal pension funds. The answer was no point because if they are not the victim then it does not happen! Ha,Ha, Where has my pension gone then. If thats not a crime, then what is??

As has been stated the fear of crime may well be the biggest issue but also as mentioned with the street lights going off real crime may well increase unless monitored

street light idea is laughable, and lets face it they fix figures before public are informed we all know that,
and Trollydolly if those are figures of the BNP you'll probably find they are a lot more accurate than the other parties will tell you, after all they have nothing to hide and the truth wont hurt which is why the 3 main parties despise the BNP because they are not affraid of truth.
