A MAN who helped make a charity for the blind and visually impaired a huge success over 25 years has been honoured for his work.

After two and half decades of dedication and hard work Bruce Bellringer, chairman of the Wickford and District Talking Newspaper, is stepping down.

As a thank you he was presented with a photograph album commemorating events and the time he has spent with the charity by incoming chairman, Sally Webb.

Mrs Webb said: “Bruce was instrumental in making the organisation run the way it is today. He started the magazine tape scheme.”

The charity records local news articles on tape every week, which are then sent out to visually impaired people across Wickford, Billericay, Basildon, Grays and South Woodham Ferrers, for free.

Mrs Webb added: “We have now moved into a sound-proofed room within the new George Hurd Day Centre in Basildon.

“We have updated our recording equipment with new digital technology and we will soon be able to offer CDs and memory sticks. Audio tapes will be sent out as long as listeners require them.”
