A HEALTH referral scheme offering overweight patients free slimming classes and gym sessions has been so successful it is to be offered by every GP surgery in the district.

NHS South West Essex is extending the scheme, which has already helped 400 people.

The primary care trust will now grant all GPs in the region the powers to subscribe vouchers to overweight obese patients, which they can redeem for 12 weekly sessions at their local WeightWatchers or Slimming World club.

The three-month scheme, which can be extended to 24 weeks by GPs, also includes free access to Basildon Council Leisure and Impulse Leisure gym facilities for a 12-week period. People in Basildon, Wickford, Billericay and Thurrock are eligible.

Dr Neel Bhaduri, public health commissioning manager at NHS South West Essex, said: “Quite a few people taking part lost five per cent of their body weight.

“If people are interested, all they have to do is ask their GP.”

Walked along the high street in Southend on Saturday and was shocked at how many fat and obese people there were waddling alongside their fat and obese kids.

I wonder where the money comes from to support this scheme?

Just hope it works.

How much money is needed to say "Eat Less, Move More, Fatty"

Even the train is chock a block of salad dodgers. They take up 2 seats instead of one. Its greed, pure and simple. Overeating is not attractive.

As an overweight person who regularly uses the train to get to and from work - I do not take up 2 seats. Nor do I take up more room than the people lolling all over the seat next to them or spread there legs out so that you don't have any room for your legs.

Some overweight people are very active and do not spend all day over eating - simply eating the wrong the sorts of food, some people's weight is caused by emotional stress/life stress, medical conditions etc - don't judge everybody as the same. Understand the problems that can cause weight gain.

I for one cannot stand it if a smoker or drinker gets on the train and sits next to or near me - I find the stench utterly repulsive it also makes me feel sick.

As for where the money comes from ask the PCT - I think you'll find that they were underspent at the end of the last financial year.

I cannot stand having an obese person sitting next to me squashing me up against the window, or pushing me off my seat. People who are quite overweight and/or obese should pay for two seats because they do indeed take up two seats.

Some people who are overweght may be active, but I'll bet 90% of the others are lazy.

Must be nice to be such a bigoted person as you. I for one am proud of who I am and will not let moronic idiots like you force me into losing weight - I will do it for myself and no one else.

Waste of money that could be spent on real health issues.

Most fat people are that way because they eat too much, eat the wrong food and don't take enough excercise

End of story

Not bigoted at all. Fat people cost the NHS billions of dollars each year. Most of the fat and obese people around are simply greedy and do not know when to stop eating.

How many skinny people stick their fat bums in your face when they are getting off a train? None. Can't say the same about the fat ones.

I too am proud of who I am. And I know when to stop eating and start exercising. I hope you lose weight lucky - you'll be a happier person for it.

SOOOOOOOOOO glad you said that!

I pay my money for a season ticket to london every year but often end up crushed against a window by an obese person. I really agree that they should pay for 2 seats, after all, by taking up 2 seats it means that someone else either has to stand up or spend an uncomfortable time being crushed into half a seat.

I know its not PC and we are not allowed to say anything anymore about any subject but most obese people do overeat/under exercise. It doesn't happen by magic

Quite frankly being PC is for the unimaginative. I'm sick of paying good money for a train ticket only to be uncomfortable for an hour while a person of weight is comfy cosy. I think from now on when a person who is very fat/obese who sits besides me and crushes me where I am uncomfortable, I will say something.

Is definitely right.

If an obese person is too big for a seat on an airplane, they are asked to leave the flight or pay for 2 tickets. As someone else literally cannot get on the plane.

Have any of you big mouths stopped to think, for one minute, that some of these "obese" people you keep slagging off, might just be on an eating programme/diet and are, in fact losing weight but have a long way to go? Why don't you give them some support instead of tarring every overweight person with the same brush with your biggoted assumptions!

Oh and Soozie, in case you haven't noticed, we don't use dollars in this country.
