We want Saxon king relics to stay in park

A NEW pressure group is hoping to persuade Southend Council to house the Saxon king relics at Prittlewell Priory.

The Saxon King in Priory Park protest group was formed after the council launched a consultation about moving the relics, which were found in a tomb near Priory Park, to a new seafront museum.

In autumn 2003, archaeologists unearthed the 7th century grave of the Saxon king in Southend.

Spokeswoman for the protest group, Patsy Link, said: “We firmly believe the most appropriate place for the artefacts would be the Priory Park Museum, a stone’s throw from where he lived, ruled, died and was buried.”

Derek Jarvis, councillor responsible for culture said: “I can understand their sentiments. However, the view was, for many reasons, the cliffs site was the most practical one although it would be costly in the first place.

“Initial study of the responses to our public consultation suggested there is widespread support for our proposals.”

Anyone interested in getting involved in the protest group should contact Ms Link on 07747 755205 or 01702 333542.

I agree totally with Patsy Link in that the closer the artefacts are to the "find" site the better and more appropriate.
In a similar way you wouldn't display the Pier Museum artefact in Priory Park Museum.
Dont think the "Day Tripper"s will be rushing to this type of cultural experience in during their day at the seaside. I feel another 30,000 page full colour consultation document coming on.....better lie down in a dark Council committee room..excuse me.....

Perhaps we should build a museum near the site to display the relics, but then you would need to improve transport links, provide car parking etc etc

Perhaps they could widen Priory CResent and provide a new car park by tarmacing over some of Priory Park?

I hope this works as I am currently sat in an RV on the Trans-Canada Highway just outside of Saskatchewan amazinging flat land.

Anyhow The Priory Park Museum is nowhere near sutable for such a valuble collection of artifacts there is not enough security, the fabric of building is far too old to be converted to acomodate such a collection, access is a major problem, these people quite clearly have not looked at the problem and dont have a clue about what exhibiting such artifacts intails.

These people need to research the facts and learn about just how diffivult it is to care for such objects its not just a case of chucking the in a glass cass and shoving the exhibition into a building such as the Priory Park Museum, they need to be kept in a far more secure location in climate controlled conditions with the very best security money can buy.

Priory park offers none of that. The best option is a completely new building, if thats at the Cliffs so be it, can you really see people supporting a new building in Priory Park...

I initially thought that the relics should be displayed in their original location, however, I now think it would be a great opportunity to create a new interesting display alongside other museum pieces and the intended art gallery. Many people I know are not even aware that Southend has a museum or art gallery so we do need to create a larger museum worth taking the time to visit. Day trippers come to Southend by train or by car, the more things that are available to visit within the central location of the train station/high street/sea front the more likely you will get people stopping off to view the displays, eat and drink in the museum and therefore spend more time/money in the town. People who come to the town for the day are not then going to get back in their car and drive up to priory park or try to catch a bus there they just won't bother. I think to move the display to the Cliffs is a great idea I just hope it actually happens and isn't just talk.

cant see whats wrong with using the existing museum we have in victoria avenue and giving it some real presige to exibit with good access to car parks and the railway station and not so hidden away causing security problems (it has a major police station almost nextdoor)

Well its now 5:28pm and am parked up in Regina in Saskatchewan, Canada. Currently -2C with patchy cloud.

On to the museums, As I said Priory Park Museum is far too small and old to convert, Central Museum is also of an age where converting it and bringing the scecurity up to a level that could be acceptable to protect the artifacts would again prove very costly the exhibition space is also very very limited.

I have a feeling the council are using this museum idea to solve a cliff slip problem they have (one which they have had ample time to solve) we dont have any more parking in the seafront area for additional attractions and with the latest fiasco with fitzpatric and the building of the cliff lift at the pier how much vandalisim has already taken place and the shear cost of that. If not central muesuem (which i still think is ideal) why not somewhere in victoria avenue and why is it that southend council always has to spend so much on consultations and arcitects when they do what they wanted anyway perhaps they might be able to combine a large casino with this idea and finish southend off for good as a family place

I think a museum in Priory park would be a great idea and a couple of burger vans etc. could turn it into a real tourist magnet.

Cant build on the cliffs if the council sell them. I thought it was at least 20 years on some of the exhibits before we got them back as they have to stabilise them to stop them crumbling away.

I think we can all forget the Cliffs as museum site or open space as the Council looks to be aiming to flog it off as land for apartment/hotel developments starting with The Esplanade Pub area. The deals are being done behind closed doors at The Civic. In return those sections will be stablised from further erosion. Sadly the erosion of the town's assets and heritage will continue at a pace.
