Domestic violence awareness highlighted in Rochford and Castle Point

THE SCOURGE of domestic violence is being highlighted this week by a group campaigning for victims.

This week marks Domestic Violence Awareness Week, so Castle Point and Rochford Domestic Violence Panel have collected 110 pairs of shoes outside Rayleigh Windmill to represent each person killed last year as a result.

The shocking reminder reflects the fact that two people on average die in the UK each week as a consequence of domestic violence.

The panel works not only to help victims, both male and female, but also to reduce the incidence of violence in the home through raising awareness of the issues.

Angela, a member of the panel who has suffered domestic violence, said: “It is very important to make people aware that domestic violence does happen and that it’s classless. It can happen to anyone.”

The panel is made up of different charities which help victims, including Women’s Aid, and is also supported by Rochford District and Castle Point Councils.
