5,000 sick days for Essex PCSOs

ESSEX community police officers had nearly 5,000 days off sick in the past year.

Police community support officers (PCSOs) had an average of 6.1 days off sick between October 2007 and October 2008.

The officers, who do not have full police powers and cannot arrest suspects, were most commonly off sick with cold or flu, with 527 days lost to the illness.

The second most common cause of the officers’ sickness was conditions affecting the leg with officers taking 568 days off with the condition on 50 separate occasions. The third top cause of PCSO sickness was sickness or diarrhoea, with 484 days lost to the illness, followed by stress which resulted in officers taking 453 days off.

The figures were revealed in a report to the Essex Police Authority, which requested information on the levels of PCSO sick leave.

But Kevin Kirby, deputy head of Essex Police’s human resources department, said the sickness levels were below the average of other public sector agencies.

He said: “The role of PCSOs is primarily about reassuring public confidence through high-visibility engagement with members of the public. This involves a high proportion of their working day being spent working in all weathers.

“Independent studies on the cause of sickness revealed where an employee’s working environment involves a high proportion of outdoor work and shifts, incidents of sickness tend to be higher compared to the average office worker.”

“In Essex the average number of PCSO working days lost is 10.9. At the DVLA the average number is 18.7 days, Child Support Agency 13.9 days, the Prison Service is 12 days and Job Centre is 11.1 days.”

They are without doubt an embarrassing dept of the Police Service created by a Social reforming left wing elitist Government.

The role that they serve was created to save money, they are toothless half trained often overweight ill disciplined scruffy unwanted side of Policing, their role is one which is no different often from 'well meaning ed members of the public'

The Police service to save money has reduced real and full professional training, which includes driving courses, initial training courses and continuation courses once they were always done where Officers were removed from their normal family lives and sent away for training to become members of the Police family where a sense of belonging and caring for the public and each other was created there was no distractions just intense training the rubbish was weeded out, now days the new recruits are trained 'in house' which means training in between getting the shopping and taking the kids to school, where distraction was a normal daily occurrence.

And that is why so many Police drivers are involved in road accidents, and often foot patrol officers have little communication skills.

The emphasis now days is on performing the role as social workers and tough enforcement 'so much wanted by the silent majority' is a thing of the past.

PCSO's are akin to the situation in 1840 when there was so many different and toothless, weak and elderly law enforcement organisations that the then Government created the Police Bill which required Local County Councils to start well trained and disciplined Police Forces.

This Government has taken us back before 1840 and the public are suffering the consequences now as they did before 1840, with many different law enforcement organisation both publicly owned and privately owned.

Police Officers who I believe do an excellent job have now been reduced to performing a role more suited to professionally trained Social workers, when there real role should be to scoop the lawless up and let the courts and social workers do their jobs.

Another very interesting fact from this story is with regard to sick leave the self employed of this country make some public servants look like 'SCIVERS'

And lets not forget thankfully the self employed and private companies are the one's that actually generate the wealth to pay for all the public servants and those on benefits!!

Private sector - 6.5 days sick

But lets not forget their holiday entitlement in the public sector which is 25 plus days a year.

This year I have had 2.5 days sick and 9 days holiday.

Lets not forget the PCSO almost all do this to serve us, the community. Who among us would want to stand up to the yobs in their place? Far from perfect but in many cases they are all we have and should be commended for their public spirit. One day on the streets protecting the public would soon open our eyes and have me taking a sickie or two. Lets not forget this is a despicable attempt by both the police and politicians to serve the community by shortchanging us and feeding cannon fodder in to the front line. Cannon fodder that is hamstrung, has no teeth and no defence. How on earth can they survive that? What the PCSO strategy has allowed is for the police and politicians to divert attention from themselves, and their gross neglect of duty to the public they are paid very handsomely to serve. Leave the PCSO's alone and lets aim our anger at the people who are really to blame.

There are 145,000 police officers in England and Wales, there are 16,000 PCSO's.

Too many people like to moan about what PCSO's can and cant do, but you dont see these same people who like to moan, go up and challenge these criminals, anti social knife carrying hoodies, with nothing on there belt. Time to get off the soap box and put it away for good.

People who work shift work are more likely to be ill, people who spend the working lives outside tend to be ill more fact! So a shift working PCSO who spends most of there time outside serving the community may well be ill more, then the average office worker.

Still whats up with the DVLA 18 days off?

Course being a public servent myself, I have it oh so easy! (only another 50 targets to get, oh and that lovely 2.0% payrise to pay the bills).

Some people really really need to think before they speak, and open there eyes EVLIC! 1840 what are you on?

Yes, 2.5 days sick....am very proud of that. Not that I have to justify anything to you - but what business is it of yours when and how often I post?

I certainly don't think that is any of your business - unless you are really my boss and are paying my salary. But I quite doubt that, you aren't smart enough to get a job.

You seem to get your jollies trying to slag me off, but it doesn't work. You just look like a bully with a bad attitude.

You know, if I only talk to one stupid person a day, its a good day, and Winston, today is a good day!! And on Sunday to boot - whoo whoo

If you don't want people to comment on your affairs don't blab them all over a public website.

I read this site on a weekend when I have a little spare time. It takes what, fifteen to thirty minutes to browse the week's stories? Are you so stupid you don't think people will notice your posts on stories all over the site? Posted mostly during working hours on weekdays? Are you then surprised when people think you are an unemployed bum sitting at home all week?

I have seen your posts morning and night.

So not only are you a pillock, but you are a lying one too.

One stupid person I have talked to twice today....

Getting back to the article, knowing some of my local PCSO's they are good hard working people who do a thankless task and like the police are always moaned about and rarely thanked. But who do people call when there is a problem!
I say keep up the good work and don't catch colds when you are out on the streets in the evenings in the rain soon to be snow, otherwise the sick rate will go up.

Elvic I strongly disagree with what you have stated. I am a public servant as is Why are there so many. I completely agree with what Why are there so many states. We have targets to reach and alot more work goes on than the customer sees. At present with the rising unemployment rate do you not think public servants throughout all sectors are also feeling the effects. The levels of work and the undue stresses that are being caused by the increasing demands from the public being put on the departments / government bodies with the same level of pay no incentives. People in the private sector have less work for more money. People in the private sector get above inflation pay rises or at least to allow them to live on a decent or within reasonable means where as alot of public servants throughout the country at the moment this year got a 0% increase for their long service to the civil service. Now do you think that things like this along with increasing case / work loads and demoralising comments like you have placed are going to help motivate the public servants that day by day take abuse from customers that is undue and still deliver a job to everybody which is expected by the customer? I have been a public servant for some time now and I have to a colleague of mine has not had one day sick since they worked for the dept and I have to say that is an achievement in itself as they have also achieved a long service which is achievable over 25 years of service. It seems to me that all public servants are getting tarred with the same brush to which alot of us are working through illness even though they are not well enough to but due to pressure by rules peoplel that are genuinely are sick end up coming into work when they really should not be. But to leave you with this thought if you feel that public sevants get it all so good why do you not become one yourself through a recruitment exercise and try working with the customers and the rules for the money we have to then tell us that we are well paid get too much leaniency and have mass amounts of holiday?

6 days sick in a year? That's not too bad considering the work they do. I know a couple of the PCSO's in Leigh and they are fantastic, and provide a great service to the area.

To IPM Basildon and any other civil servant.

I do not really care if you agree or disagree with me that is what debate is about.

If you actually read what I said then you cannot disagree=

Public Servants hard working or not do not generate the wealth to pay for civil servants the private sector does.

With regard to the issue of low wages etc etc that is an irrelevant argument, the fact still remains only the private sector generates the money to pay civil servants!!

Think about it!!
