Eastgate shopping centre's eco loos are best

WHEN you’re spending some Christmas pennies this year, you could do a lot worse than go to Basildon’s Eastgate Centre.

The toilets in the shopping centre have been voted the best in the UK, beating some 1,700 other entries from businesses and Government departments.

Speaking from the ceremony, which was held at the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham, Hans Wustefeld, general manager at the shopping centre, said he was over the moon to have won.

He said: “It’s like winning the cup at Wembley. I can’t wait to bring the trophy back to Basildon so everyone can walk past and kiss it.”

A major reason for the triumph was the loos’ green plumbing system, as the toilets use recycled rain water from the centre’s roof.

Mr Wustefeld dedicated the award to his team at Eastgate. He said: “I’m so pleased we have the best toilet facilities. My team has been working very hard for a long time to ensure our customers get the best service.”

The trophy will be given pride of place outside the loos in the catering area of the shopping centre.

Mother and baby changing facilities at the centre were also deemed to be the best in the country.

Come on Basildon is always put down and when we win something someone still puts a dampner on it? people are always moaning about money being spent on projects that are not going to help people. This is a project that assists the community and the environment with the money being saved on water rates can possibly be ploughed into other projects or areas or products within the shopping centre or community.

The toilets smelling well Im sorry but whenever people go to the toilet it isnt always going to smell of roses and no toilet paper ok but it is coming up to christmas and the town was heaving as I was in the town myslef. If there was no one in sight could someone not of asked the foodcourt staff if there was anyone around as the toilets needed replenishing? As far as I have observed the food court staff have radios so could that not of been a possibility?

I think people are all too ready to put Basildon down but when we do something that wins us some praise you still can not please some people.

I love them loos. Even if I am not in a great need to spend a penny I still go just so i can wash my hand and then yse the Dyson driers. If you havent tried them driers, get down there. Its like a hurrican hitting your hands.
As with all toilets, If something isnt to your liking then mention it to a member of staff and they can arrange for a facilties team to put it right.
As for moaning about the smell, do you go in a puv and say 'err, it smells of beer in here'. C'mon, give us a break

I would just like to congratulate Basildon on winning this honour...

Of all the awards out there, this is the one they must have held closest to their hearts.

It's still 9 dots and a dash at the end of the day!

This has to be a joke. Every time I go in those toilets half are not working or blocked, and the others are covered in human waste.

The hand washing facilities are good, though.

I have just found out about this award and cannot believe it. It must be made up by the management. I complained to the management in september by e-mail about how awful they are, and they did not have the decency to answer it.
