New street bins aim to improve recycling

EYE-CATCHING pink litter bins are being introduced as part of a renewed drive to get more people recycling.

The bins extend the highly successful pink bag scheme, allowing people to recycle plastic, paper, cardboard and cans while out and about.

Litter put in the black side of the bin will go to landfill like existing waste. However, items placed in the pink side will be sorted for recycling. Almost 30 tonnes of rubbish is collected from litter bins in Castle Point each month.

The new bins are being placed in main shopping precincts, with 15 in total covering Canvey, Hadleigh, Benfleet, Tarpots and Thundersley. If the trial is a success, more of the bins will be installed around the borough.

Ray Howard, councillor responsible for waste, said: “These bins are very eye-catching. I hope they encourage people to recycle even more. Many of the things people put in a litter bin are recyclable, like newspapers, drinks cans and plastic bottles.

“Putting those items in the pink side of the new bins is such a simple way to help the environment.”

So why can't Southend Council implement this idea. Is it a case of others lead, we follow?

Surely this would be a great idea in Southend, especially with Easter comming up and day trippers expected. Why is it only other councils see this as a good idea?
