Parents' moving tributes to Eleanor

THE PARENTS of Eleanor McGrath have paid tribute to a "wonderful daughter" who lit up the lives of all who knew her.

John and Gillian McGrath spoke of the void that would be left in their lives after their 14-year-old daughter was struck by a car in Tyrone Road, Shoebury.

They said: "Eleanor loved life and was a wonderful daughter. She would often laugh so much that she cried tears and had a kind and loving nature.

"She had a good sense of humour and was a great impersonator. She really was a much loved sister, daughter, grand-daughter and friend.

"She lit up the lives of all who knew her and this tragic incident has left a void that will never be filled.

Eleanor lived at her home in Bishopsteignton, Shoebury, with her 46-year-old parents, brother Richard, 17, and family dog Dexter.

She was head girl at Thorpedene Infant and Junior Schools before going on to Southend High School for Girls.

Friends leave sea of flowers for Eleanor

FRIENDS have left a sea of flowers at the scene of a crash which claimed the live of a "lovely, beautiful" teenager.

Eleanor McGrath, 14, had been on life support since Friday night, after a Citroen C1 ploughed into her and 13 others who were celebrating a pal’s birthday in Tyrone Road, Thorpe Bay.

Youngsters from Southend High School for Girls and Southend High School for Boys made a pilgrimage to the site to pay their final respects yesterday.

Robyn Althasen, of Parkanaur Avenue, Thorpe Bay, was one of many who left flowers at the site in Tyrone Road.

The 18-year-old said her sister Erika, 14, was one of Eleanor’s friends at school.

Robyn said: “She was a lovely, beautiful girl. She was always round my house. I never thought this would happen to someone I know. My sister has made a collage last night with a picture of them together. They were part of a big group of friends. Everybody is devastated.”

Yesterday afternoon a large group of teenagers took chairs down to the site and sat and wept as they remembered their friend.

Families living near the scene of the crash also spoke of their sadness and paid tribute to how well the teenagers responded to the accident.

Dr Bilquis Agha, 69, lives on the road and was one of the first people at the scene.

She said: “I was in the kitchen when my granddaughter, who lives next door, came running in and said what had happened.

“There were teenagers everywhere. There was a girl on my driveway. I came out with blankets.

“People were screaming. I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since it happened. I checked the girl and made sure she could breathe, and I did the same for the others.

“She was a beautiful girl. I am so shocked this has happened.”

l A 17-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving in connection with the crash and has been released on police bail until May 7, pending further inquiries.

Schools in shock

A SCHOOL community is shrouded in shock and sadness following the death of Eleanor McGrath.

The 14-year-old was a pupil at Southend High School for Girls and pupils, teachers and other staff are struggling to come to terms with the news.

Counsellors have been working in the school since pupils returned on Monday.

A short assembly was held yesterday and headteacher Alison Clewlow paid tribute to Eleanor describing her as “bright, beautiful and helpful”.

Mrs Clewlow said: “Staff, pupils and friends feel Eleanor’s loss deeply. She was a bright, lively, cheerful, beautiful and good-natured pupil.

“In her form, her hand was always first to go up with an offer of help and she was very supportive of her fellow pupils.

“Eleanor had just come back from the school ski trip where she was merry company and had a brilliant time.

“She loved to be in the limelight and contributed wholeheartedly to the life of the school.

“We will miss her. Our thoughts are with her family and friends.”

Earlier the school had praised its caring pupils and said they will work hard to take care of each other.

Parents have also paid tribute to the strength shown by Eleanor’s family who even contacted them to tell them the devastating news that she had died.

Elizabeth Mower, whose daughter Lyndsey was best friends with Eleanor, said: “Her parents have been so very strong.

“They text some of us parents at 1am to tell us she had died.

“They said in their message they did not want the children to hear it the next day on the news. They are being so brave and were trying to protect the other children.”

She said she had to break the news to her daughter the next morning, adding: “The children are all absolutely devastated. I don’t know how my daughter will cope.

“They have all been staying together and seeking comfort and support together.

“Lyndsey and her friends had bought get well cards and presents to take to Eleanor in hospital. They’re still sat in my house. They’ll never be delivered.”

Dr Haroon Siddique, who lives nearby and rushed to help the victims on the night, said: “This is terrible news. We all hoped that all the children involved would have fought through this.

“The children were all remarkable on the night and will need a lot of support to get through this.”

The Echo has opened a new forum for people to pay tribute to Eleanor to offer comfort and support to her family and friends. Readers are asked to keep this for tributes only

We both knew Eleanor from our bestfriend, who was her cousin.

Everytime we saw her walking past us, she would always smile or wave at us. She was such a nice girl, she really doesn't deserve what has happened to her.

Even though we were not that close to Eleanor, we still get touched by what has happened.

I didn't know Eleanor, but I was moved to tears on this tragic news, she seems to have been just the sort of young person we so desparately need in our increasingly unpleasant world.
This loss is so much harder to bear in that it was so pointless and avoidable.
We must now care for the ones left behind who will be hurting and whose grief will seem unbearable. Life will go on, and we must not dwell on what might have been, but rather think of the light she will have brought into the lives of those close to her during her short life, and be thankful for the gift of knowing her.

What a beautiful girl, and from accounts from friends, in more ways than one. I never knew Elenor, but like many people of this side of town, I have been following the developments daily and praying for her recovery.

What a tragic loss of a life that was only just beginning.

Thoughts go out to all the friends and family of Elenor and those involved in the devestating events of that night.

"Suddenly --
You were gone
From all the lives
You left your mark upon

I remember --
How we talked and drank
Into the misty dawn

We ran by the water
On the wet summer lawn

I remember --

Tried to believe
But you know it's no good
This is something
That just can't be understood

I remember --
The shouts of joy
Skiing fast through the woods

I learned your love for life
I feel the way that you would

I remember --

I feel the way you would
This just can't be understood..."

I am so, so sorry to hear this news. I did not know Eleanor personally, but my little brother is friends with many of the group that were there on Friday, and ever since I have been hoping and praying everyone would pull through. Despite never having the privilege to know her, after the events of the past days, I feel I do. I can tell you she is beautiful, I can tell you she is kind, I can tell you she is funny and always put a smile on people's faces. I can tell you she was a special person full of warmth and laughter. I only need to hear the words of others who knews her to realise what a special girl she was, and how she touched the lives of those around her; even mine. To her family, I am so sorry, and my thoughts are with you. There are no other words to say; I will not say I know how you feel, because I don't, and I won't say time will heal, because it won't. What I will say however, is time will make things better - and one day you will be able to think of Eleanor with a smile, and not with tears. My thoughts are with you.
To her friends - do not think of what may have been, but think of what she brought to your life. Do not think of her with sorrow or guilt, for her life was beautiful, and it should be remembered for that. Treasure every memory, and know she is at peace.
To Eleanor - you were too good for this life, may you rest in peace forever more. RIP little angel xx

Tiny Angels rest your wings
sit with me for awhile.
How I long to hold your hand,
And see your tender smile.
Tiny Angel, look at me,
I want this image clear....
That I will forget your precious face
Is my biggest fear.
Tiny Angel can you tell me,
Why you have gone away?
You weren't here for very long....
Why is it, you couldn't stay?
Tiny Angel shook her head,
"These things I do not know....
But I do know that you love me,
And that I love you so"

but never mind, you have nothing to fear.
For you my friend will be, forever young,
Forever in the heart of memories.

Lost in the glory of all time,
the wisdom was there within that smile,
You see you could have told us,
there within lies the mystery.

So shed a smile, and grin a tear,
For you my friend, will be,

I am sat here crying at the tragic loss and waste of such a young life.
It was completely avoidable
unfortunately I never knew Eleanor but I really wish I had… my close friend did.
We wept for you all day at school
From what her friends have said she was an amazing girl.
God Obviously needed another angel,
He only takes the best….
This world wasn’t good enough for such a great heart
everyone who knew her obviously were the luckiest people alive
Her family must be so proud to have had such a wonderfull girl in their lives…
Eleanor never deserved this…
I pay my respects and pray for her family and friends may they find comfort in the happy times they had with her.
Forever in everyone’s hearts.
She will be greatly missed…..

but i think this whole situation proves even more that there is a god.
god wants the best people as his angels. he looked down, saw els, and thought ' that beautiful, popular, loving girl is too good and perfect for the earth she is on now; she deserves the best.' this is with God.
its just, i know it sounds sellfish els, but we just weren't ready to say goodbye to you yet.

My thoughts go to everyone involved in this horrific incident, and their famillies. Over the last few weeks i have been rocked by bad news so close to home regarding young adults, 1st poor Tom and Stephen, who both my children were at school with and now Eleanor and all the others involved from local schools. It is so tragic and almost incomprehensible, i am lost for words. However everyone please be strong, my thoughts are with you all.

RIP little angel xx Tiny Angels rest your wings sit with me for awhile. Whatever we were to each other, that we are still.

Play, smile, think of me, pray for me.

Although we loved you dearly, We could not make you stay.

I have been keeping tabs on this all week, looking and hoping this young ladies condition would improve, what happened to Eleanor and the other young people was a complete tragedy, my thoughts are with the family, no parent should ever have to bury there own child. Thou I didn't know her personally, I feel it needs to be said at 14yrs old and dead in this country in this day and age is just such a waste and great loss.

The emergency services did such a great job that day and they deserve the praise, there quick actions gave all those involved a fighting chance, but some things are just meant to be, some things can be changed, some things cant. I sit here now, with tears in my eyes, my thoughts with the family wondering how they will cope, I'm thinking of how I would, and just cant.

Like many others in this forum I have found comfort in poetry. Whilst I never knew Eleanor, I do know she will rest in peace, chosen as one of the best. She will never die, not in our hearts nor from the memories of those who knew her. She rests now at peace-no pain will distrupt her dreams...

As a pupil of SHSB I have seen the pain many are going through, yet can only imagine the pain of her close friends and family. I wish them the best in these difficult times, but know that Eleanor's friends, parents and sisters will be looked upon and cared for by the latest addition to God's 'best'.

What a tragedy, there are no words to describe my feelings of sadness and emptiness on hearing the news of Eleanor's passing away. I didn't know her personally but my daughter described her as one of the nicest people you could meet.

To all the girls and boys from Thorpe Hall School, the Southend High schools, and any others involved, I just want to say again what a absolute credit you are to humankind. My own daughter was involved and witnessed the full trauma of events, and along with several others did all she could to help. You should all be so proud of yourselves - we all know you did the very best you possibly could, and just knowing they were being cared for by such loving, unselfish people must have helped the injured, even if it was on a subconscious level in some cases.

I think it's high time the true meanings of the phrases "Essex Boy" and "Essex Girl" were revised.

What a lovely message and I quite agree with what you say in the last paragraph. x

I have commented this loads now but I cant stop thinking of you.

You were one of the nicest, most friendly people I have ever met, and you didnt deserve this.

You always smiled around school, and the chats we've had will never be forgotten.

Everyones eyes are wet from crying, even people who didnt know you.
You have truly touched the whole school, and brought us much closer.

Your friends are distraught, and miss you and love you very much, and they always will.

Guess you were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

We may cry over you, but we all still love you, and will continue to you love you forever.

No one could put words down to describe how upsett your family must be right now. But, our thoughts are with them all, and they have the support of everyone.
Your mum dad, and sisters are extremely proud of you Els.
So is everyone.
You gave so much to the school, and now its like a gap that can't be filled.

You have achieved so much in your life, and we must remember the memories we have of you.

You will never be forgotten by any of us here at SHSG, especially me and the 13.

We know you tried your best to pull through.
Now you can look down from above and help Jack, Poppy, Ellen and anyone else who was injured pull through.

We will all miss you incredibly.

Always in our hearts and thoughts.

Rest in peace my little angel.
Your life was taken so young, you meant so much to me.

I don't know Eleanor personally, but last Saturday I was told of the accident by Eleanor's best friend who is a student at my stage school. Brogan was one of many of Eleanor's close friends who attend my school.

All of the students have been broken hearted, and were taking it in turns to call Eleanor's family and other teenagers involved in this tragic accident throughout the day.

So my tutors, all the students, and myself were totally involved by the end of the day.

When something so terrible happens it really brings home how much people really care, and although some teenagers get bad press, I am very proud to know all of these loving, and caring teenagers who train with me. They are all trying to come to terms with this news. Just shows you how important friends and family are at a time like this, not only to support each other, but also the parents of all of the teenagers involved. Especially Eleanor's family.

I have a teenage daughter and just cannot imagine life without her. So the loss of a child has to be one of the worse things a parent ever has to endure.

I attended the performance of Chess last night at Southend High for Boys and sat in tears as the audience were informed that Eleanor had passed away, and the wonderful dedication to her at the start of the evening. Eleanor has touched everyone's heart.

On behalf of everyone at my school. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you that were involed in this shocking and tragic event. That has changed everyone's life in the last 7 days.

It makes you realise that life is so preciousand how easily it can be taken from us.

I’ve already started crying before I’ve even written this.

Els, I can’t believe you have gone.
You were such a lovely, warm-hearted person, and you never failed to put a smile on someone's face.
I have gotten quite close to you recently at school and you were such an amazing girl, the laughs and jokes we've had together will never be forgotten.
You didn’t deserve this, no one does.
Guess you were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Everyone was behind you 110%, and we all hoped and prayed that you would pull through. You were a fighter Els.
We know that you tried.
And everyone here at SHSG misses you incredibly, even the people that didn’t know you.
You have brought the school closer together, and everyone is caring for each other, and thinking of you.
Our faces are all wet from crying, but we must remember the good memories we had of you.

I can’t describe what your family must be feeling right now. Our thoughts are with them., and they have the support of everybody around them.
Your mum and dad have always said how proud they are of you to my parents, they loved you so much, and so did your sisters.
You have achieved so much in your life, and its such a shame that it was taken away from you like this.

Myself, and your friends are distraught to see you go so quickly. Erika, Georgia, Lyndsey, Brogan, Gabby, Sophie, and everybody else misses you so much. You were a great friend to everybody, and no-one could ever have a bad word to say about you. Everyone is deeply upset by the loss of you, and we will remember you as the happy, smiley, stunning girl that you were.

I’ll always remember you Els. Always and forever.
I’ve made a promise to myself, that when I am older, if I have a girl, she will be called Eleanor-Grace.
I came to see you in hospital and said a prayer for you.
I kissed the top of your head and hoped that you would pull through this.
I’ve never really appreciated how much you’ve done for me.
All the chats we’ve had together, and the laughs and jokes.
I’ll never, ever forget you sweetheart.
I still remember on holiday when we met and discovered we went to the same school, I knew we would be friends from then.
You always gave me the biggest hug when you saw me, and no matter how upset or down you were, always tried to cheer up someone else.

I guess god needed another angel up there to watch over everybody.
He is SO lucky to have you Els.
Take care of your family and friends, we all need you right now.
Especially Jack, Poppy and Ellen who are still in hospital..
We know that you would of wanted us to stay strong for them.

There will be one more star shining in the sky tonight.
The brightest one up there.
Looking down on us all, and smiling.
I wish I could see your beautiful face again, the memories I have of you are indescribable.

Heaven’s new angel.
Rest in peace, sweet dreams beautiful.
Untill we meet again.
Never forgotten, always in my heart.

Everytime I close my eyes, your smile is always there, and it always will be.

*R.I.P* My beautiful Eleanor – Grace.
Such an amazing girl, with an amazing personality to match.
I love you so much Els, xxxxxx

As a father of a 14 year old girl, I always find it painful to read about the death of any young girl, esp, through car crashes, etc (and there are far, far too many) - But as my daughter was in Eleanor's year at SHSG, this tragedy is a little closer to home, and reading through the above comments I find myself in tears. Although I didn't know Eleanor, and my daughter had little contact with her, I can see that Eleanor was very beautiful, and happy and friendly to all, the kind of person that brightens up one's day, just by her being there. So rest in peace, Eleanor, and I wish love and the strength to cope with this terrible loss to those closest to her.

With children at SHSB and with a lot of contact with years 11,12,13 this strikes very close to home. So I believe write for all my family when I say to Eleanor's family and friends that you are in our thoughts and so is Eleanor.

If you find you need to talk to someone outside of events consider CRUSE Bereavement Care, a charity. Their number is in the phone book.

As a father of a son at SHSB and a girl at SHSG I know only too well how this tragedy is affecting so many people. Firstly I would like to convey my sincere condolences to Eleanor's family on her passing. I cannot begin to imagine how you must feel but I hope you can draw strength from the messages you read here, the obvious warmth and high regard in which Eleanor was held, and the fact that she was blessed with so many wonderful friends, many of whom are themselves known to me, my son and my daughter. Secondly, my thoughts are also with all the other boys, girls and parents directly involved in this tragic incident and I wish all those injured, especially Jack, Ellen and Poppy a speedy and full recovery. I also send warm wishes to all parents who have had to witness the heartache of seeing their children suffer in ways that we would hope are never repeated, as a consequence of Friday's events. I would like to thank the emergency services and all hospital staff who dedicate themselves to helping others, also thanks to the Tyrone Road residents who dealt with our young people so wonderfully.
Finally I want to echo the sentiments of many others by paying tribute to the way in which our youngsters have conducted themselves. They are truly an inspiration and our future. RIP Eleanor ****

I think about it and to me, it just feels like your on a holiday.

Me and you have become really close the past year or so, and you have been such a wonderful friend to me.

I have such indescribable memories of you, and I will never let them go...All the chats we've had around school and after school sometimes, have given me such wonderful and happy memories, and I will keep them safe forever.

I will remember you as the happy, smiley, warm-hearted person you were. No-one could ever have a bad word to say about you, you were truly one of the nicest people I knew.

I prayed every night hoping that you would pull through this. Everyone at SHSG misses you incredibly, especially your close friends. They love you so much and will comtinue to love you, and remember the wonderful memories they have with you.
You have touched the hearts of those that didn't know you, and of those that were privileged to know you.

I have cried non-stop since hearing about the accident when I woke up on Saturday morning.
I don't think I have another tear left in my body.
Just hearing your name or seeing your picture makes my eyes well up.
I honestly can't understand why this had to happen to you, it just feels like an empty gap in my heart, and nothing can seem to fill it.

Anyone that knew you would always say what a lovely, smiley girl. Your smile was infectious. You were such a brave, beautiful girl.

My deepest thoughts and support go out to your family, they have the support of the whole community, and its times like these that we realise what matters most...caring for each other.

Everytime I close my eyes, your picture remains in my head and I see your beautiful face smiling back at me.

Take care of Jack, Poppy and Ellen, and everyone who affected by this horrific accident.

There's going to be one more star up in the sky, and it'll be the brightest one up there.
Your an angel now babe. A beautiful angel, god is so lucky to have you.

Thankyou for everything we've done together. My memories are safe with me now. The laughs, the chats, the jokes we've shared together are amazing.
Remember after school when you fell over and couldnt get up because you were laughing so much?
Or when we called ourselves the Twinny-Things.
I'll never forget you sweetheart.

This was such a tragic accident that could have easily been avoided.
My daughter Ella has recently gotten quite close to Eleanor, and used to confide in her a lot, and had become good friends during the past 7 or 8 months.

Eleanor has been to our house a couple of times, and she was such a happy, smiley girl and deserved none of this.
Although I didn’t know Eleanor well, my daughter always spoke very highly of her, and is finding it very hard to accept Eleanor’s loss and can’t bring herself to pay respects at the crash site just yet.
Even though they weren’t best friends, she is still incredibly sad, but the pupils at SHSG are sticking together and looking after each other at this sad time.

No one deserves this much pain and heartache, and my family’s support goes out to Eleanor’s family and close friends.

The girls were off last Thursday and we saw Eleanor with her Mum down the Broadway. Both Eleanor and my daughter waving at each other like they hadnt seen each other for weeks rather than the day before at school. I remember thinking how lucky they were to have such care free happy lives....
I cant begin to imagine how her family must be feeling at their beautiful girl leaving her so young and happy life and our thoughts and prayers are with them.
Last night I read an entry in Adelas homework diary for June 09. Eleanor had made a diary note and kindly signed as the parent for the week on how she was going to be able to afford to buy a Chanel bag for her party as they are all doing work experience for two weeks which meant she would well be able to get one..
I hope that where ever she is now that someone up there can lay their hands on one for her...I dont think SHSG will ever be quite the same ....****

They say if you can count the number of friends on one hand then you are a lucky person. I hope that wherever you are now, you know that you had more people who loved you than anyone could ever dream of. I don't think i've ever seen so many people so devastated and i have to say that although i never knew you, i can feel your ripples.

R.I.P little girl, such a waste of life, you sound truly beautiful inside and out and no doubt will leave a huge hole in a lot of peoples lives

Such another tragic loss, taken so suddenly but never forgotten.

They always take the special ones.

Dear Mr & Mrs John Mcgrath ,

I was so upset to hear about Eleanor’s accident on last Friday the 6th March. On your last visit at Café Masala, she was just bubbling over with friends and relatives . I guess that’s the way I’ll remember her–bubbly, excited, smart young girl.

I can only imagine the pain you’re going through at the senselessness of it all. Someone has said the deepest agony on earth is burying one’s own child. I’m sure that now you’re numbed by the suddenness, by the weight of the loss, and by the decisions facing you. But in a few weeks when you feel the need to get away and must have time to yourselves, we want you to consider coming to have dinner with us at The Café Masala. Just phone us to let us know when, and we’ll make sure things are ready for you.

Please know our hearts are breaking for what you must be experiencing now. We pray God’s comfort.

Sincerely,
Altaf

This absolutely horrifies me.

I have been a resident of the Southend area all my life, and as I am currently at University in Leicester I have only heard of this through my mother.

It sounds as if such a wonderful, prosperous life has been cut short so prematurely. I can offer no words of comfort to those touched personally by this tragedy other than these: firstly that only the good die young, and secondly that God has his reasons for taking angels sooner than anyone would ever have dared to think.

May Eleanor rest in peace and watch over her loved ones for the rest of their days. This is a tragedy in every respect. Southend will be a duller place with one less vibrant and colourful life to grace it.

It's nearly a year now Els.
I can't believe it, nothing's been the same at school without you.
I remember the first few weeks and the lunch times full of tears.
But we smiled for you.

I love you so much angel, you'll never be forgotten.
&Well done Jack, you're nearly there :)

I love you Eleanor-Grace.
...remember the day we went to the seafront and you nearly fell off of the wall :) I've got the pictures up on my wall still.

I love you xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
