Campaigners' anger at lack of action over traffic lights

Why are we waiting? Councillors and residents at the zebra crossing Why are we waiting? Councillors and residents at the zebra crossing

RESIDENTS campaigning to get traffic lights installed at a dangerous zebra crossing are angry no work has started – eight months after they were promised the improvement.

A petition signed by 539 people living near the crossing, which is close to the BP petrol station, in Long Road, Canvey, was handed to county councillor Ray Howard in July 2007.

A year later, Mr Howard was promised by County Hall that £100,000 had been set aside to do the work. But as the months rolled on, residents have been getting increasingly frustrated by the lack of action.

Campaigner Roy Haffield, 71, of Janett Avenue, Canvey, said: “We are having near misses here every day of the week.

“We need the traffic signals there to allow the public to cross without getting knocked down.”

The group was spurred into action back in July 2007, after there were three accidents on the crossing in three days.

In February last year, a man was treated by paramedics after being knocked off his scooter when a van failed to stop at the crossing.

Their frustration at the lack of action was added to when they saw an article in the Echo reporting that the county council was going to spend £100,000 improving a crossing outside the Hoy and Helmet pub in High Road, Benfleet, where there have been no serious accidents.

The move is in part to stop traffic trying to get to the station being held up by people crossing the road.

Mr Haffield added: “The priority must be to save a life, not the problem of people queueing to get into the station and causing a back-up. My worry is the money has been issued and has gone to the wrong place.”

Norman Hume, cabinet member responsible for highways and transportation said: “It is still our intention to deliver this scheme.

“A full programme of highways works is currently being drawn up which are scheduled at the beginning of each year.

“I would like to reassure residents funding has not been taken from this scheme and put into the improvements in South Benfleet, as these are two completely separate allocations.”

How frustrating! It is a very dangerous crossing and it should be sorted. That said, there are traffic lights not too far away from the crossing so it will be interesting to see how they deal with the extra traffic congestion that is very likely to occur by adding more lights along that stretch of road.

It has always been a dangerous crossing.
My daughter was knoked down on it many years ago going to school and for some reason drivers seem to miss it. Perhaps it should be moved further down the other side of the garage by the shops.
As for the money allocated and not used it has probably been spent on rises and proping up the pension fund

i saw an accident there last sunday, a car pulled out from new road when the traffic was heavy but crawling, the motor workshop next to garage reversed their truck out onto the crossing area and the car pulling out hit the truck, whats the truck doing reversing out onto the zig zag area of a crossing anyway, its illegal, plod stopped, said something and drove off, move the crossing to the nearer point of the first set of shops

You don't need lights, you need a change in culture from main road priority to equal priority based on common law principles of fair play. In all other walks of life we take it in turns. Why not on the road? By all means reinforce the idea of equal priority with some re-design along shared space lines. For more on this, see FiT Roads.

At least you can see the white marking on this crossing. The ones is Rayleigh are fading badly and as for the one at the top of London Hill, it's hardly visible at all! I'm sure the film is replaced in speed cameras regularly and checked if working, so why not better maintenance of crossings?

What ever happened to the green cross code surely looking both ways before crossing is all that is needed?

And as there is a crossing there what could be more simpler?

does it really need a spend of £100,000 to improve the crossing or perhaps a change of mind set for road users and pedestrians.

Ray Howard will use any excuse to get votes

Read your highway code old chap. If you did you may find that on a Zebra crossing, the right of way is with the pedestrian NOT the driver. It's drivers who need to ensure that the crossing is clear!
