ESSEX County Council leader Lord Hanningfield has been awarded for his dedication to the countryside.
Lord Hanningfield was given the Countryside Alliance Political Award in London, where he was praised for fighting to keep rural post offices and communities alive.
The awards are designed to celebrate people who preserve communities, traditions and businesses in the countryside.
Simon Hart, chief executive of the Countryside Alliance, said: “Lord Hanningfield has done much to highlight and safeguard the future of Essex’s rural communities.
“He loves the countryside, yet lives in the south east of England, where supply seems to be diminishing rapidly.”
The leader was also praised for championing the Year of Food and Farming, in 2008.
