Lives shattered by tragic night

THE family of a man who died while in police custody say they are “greatly disappointed” at the findings of a jury into the circumstances surrounding his death.

Jurors returned a narrative verdict at the inquest of Faisal Al-Ani, and found that police officers did not use inappropriate force when restraining him in the High Street, Southend, in 2005.

However, they did find that inappropriate consideration was given, and inappropriate attention was paid, to Mr Al-Ani’s welfare.

Bumper and Borncanveybird you are talking crap. Who do you think sat on that jury, twelve coppers? You know one side of the story but have np idea of the polices side. Where do you get off making a judgement on the polices actions based on a story in the echo? If you have been on the recieving end asay you have canveybird then there is a perfectly unbiased IPCC you can go to and have it investigated. Probably didn't though.

My niece attends The Fitzwimarc school and along with all the rest of the pupils at the school brought a note home stating 2 teachers are off with swine fever a third who shares the same property continues to teach and the school remains open, surely as a precaution the teacher who lives under the same roof as the two who are off with swine fever should also remain away from the school and the school closed, or does the school want to share swine fever around Rayleigh.

At the end of the day he committed an arrestable offence and obviously struggled against that arrest. If he hadn't been in that situation then this wouldn't have arisen so 'you live by the sword and so shall you die by it!' Don't misbehave and you'll never be in that situation.

I have just looked at the CCTV and must ask " What were the 3 femail officers doing" The man clearly was a danger he even attacked a lad on a bike and they just stood there. In these days of equality if they are unable or unwilling to get " stuck in " and do a full job then they best leave. its unfair to leave it to the men to do the work.
As regards all the B..S.... spouted here about cover ups. That is al l it is B....S.... Every time an incident like this takes place it is fully investigated, as supported by the lead B S who claims he got compensation.

when are we going to stand-up for our policeforce for f**ks sake!? i would like to see something similar for them as we do for 'armed forces day'. these guys face this kind of scrutiny often now as people want to blame someone else and get compo. This idiot was behaving badly, acting like a thug and had to be restrained or he would have totally lost it no doubt. The police stepped in and made an arrest as you would expect them too! Yes it is a shame he died in custody and maybe the police could/should have checked up on him etc but whats the chances they were dealing with some other felon ?! STAND UP FOR THE POLICE and stop this beurocracy!

Can anyone not see what is clear! The man is clearly disturbed (mental problem) and is being antagonised by the kids on bikes while the police stand there waiting for the guy to react! The blow to the back of the neck caused the heart attack later in custody. The same thing happened to the guy at May Day riots that suffered a heart attack after being struck on back of neck. TIME TO RE- ASSESS RESTRAINT PROCEDURES!

Al-Ani had more mental health problems than you could shake a stick at. So maybe we should be asking the question why was he allowed to walk the streets? He was a danger to himself and others. As for those critisising the PCSO's for standing around it is not in there job remit to go hands on they merely report what is happening. The two lads who were allegedly antagonising Al-Ani were doing no more than any other two kids would confronted by a person behaving in this manner. The blow given to Al-Ani is an approved technique for bringing someone to order and was not found to be the cause of his heart attack. People with these mental health problems should not be on the streets alone but I'm afraid care in the community has decreed otherwise.

Why is it we always hear about these kind of negative incidents regarding policing and never when officers put themselves in danger to protect members of the public, which happens and is never reported. I know of many incidents where police have put themselves at risk but these are never reported in the press. It is clear this person had mental problems and it is very sad that he died. People with mental problems need more help than the authorities are giving them, I don,t know about care in the community it clearing is not working needs to be changed and quickly.
