Fraudsters target south Essex cashpoints

FRAUDSTERS have been targeting cashpoints across south Essex over the past two weeks.

Police have seized five illegal devices in Benfleet, Rochford, and Rayleigh which have been swallowing up bank cards.

A mobile phone camera than takes a picture of the person entering their pin number. The crook then has both the card and the pin.

Incidents were reported at Barclays’ branches in Rochford, Rayleigh and Benfleet, at a branch of Abbey in Benfleet, and at Lloyds TSB, also in Benfleet.

One of these devices was also attatched to a Barclays cash point on Canvey. The Police did actually catch someone with tools attempting to do the Halifax on Canvey as well - They had worked their way down the A13 according to the Copper on site with the forensics.

My son had his card cloned from the BP garage at westcliff last wednesday.they checked it twice early thursday morning but were unable to get anything out as his wages hadnt gone in. fortunately his bank contacted him and have issued him with a new card. so beware its the BP garage and i also know someone it happened to from the tesco express just across the road.

I think the Banks need to make these machines more secure through position and design as well as making more effort to alert the public to these related crime issues. At the moment it's low profile by small print at cash points and reading article here. At least here it appears someone thankfully was alerted to report suspicious activities.

I nearly got done over at Barclays in Leigh. it ate my card & I pulled the device off & got my card out - I reported it to Barclays but they really weren't that bothered! I've still got the "device" it's quite crude, I'm quite embarassed that I didn't notice it! needless to say I'll be MUCH more aware now!

Why can't the banks cash machine have a camera, which would identify when these devices are connected to the unit. It is shocking that Barclays (Shoeburylass msg) do not seem unduly concerned. Make the bank staff perform a daily visual check, until they resolve.

It's a PIN
Not a PIN Number.

Got Done over At Barclays In Leigh Broadway In May When Visiting From Ireland. When I Put My Card in The Machine, It Kept It & Said It Was "Out Of Order". By The Time I Realised What Was Really Out Of Order, It Was To Late, Shed Loads Of Money Had Been Stolen. To Make It Worse The Same Machine Was Tampered With The Following Evening & Some One Else Got Ripped Off. Last I Heard The Police Were STILL Waiting For Barclays To Contact Them With CCTV Footage & Other Info That Could Have Been Helpfull To Catch The Thief!!!...Not Very Good Is It!!!!

If you have the device why have you not handed it to the Police?

@Southendian Tbh, after speaking to my bank & Barclays, there didn't seem much point, they made it sound like such a non-event. As it goes, they're coming round tomorrow to look at it now.

Perhaps the Echo could come and photograph the device and publish the picture so we can all see what to look out for.

This really annoys me. Banks have a duty to do whatever they have to to protect their customers money and personally i dont think they are pulling their weight. Every single cash point should have CCTV and should be checked daily, (remotely using said CCTV if necessary) for signs of tampering. Or even more simple, how about a picture on the screen of the cash point which shows you exactly what the cash point should look like before you even put in your card? Instead of f#cking adverts. That way if there is extra bits of plastic stuck where the card reader is you would know straight away?

I have thought about this problem and how easy it could be to solve. You should have it so the card goes in at an angle (top left hand corner goes in first) and have the slot to the very far right of the machine, just enough room to the side to fit the card in. This way, nothing can be attached over the slot. I can sort of picture it in my head how it'll work if that makes sense!
