Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London, is nobody’s fool.
Although his support for the idea of a new airport in the Thames Estuary is probably influenced by his wish to spare his voters from a third runway at Heathrow, the study he commissioned to look into its technical feasibility merits closer examination.
The civil engineer undertaking the study said it would be easier to build an airport in the estuary than in Hong Kong or Singapore .
The problem of ensuring free passage for shipping or impact on the tidal flow could be overcome by building on two strategically placed islands.
Importantly, it would significantly reduce flights over residential areas generate a massive amount of employment over a ten-year construction period.
