BASILDON Hospital wants a temporary ward while refurbishment work takes place.
Bosses want planning permission to erect an outbuilding, which can cater for 24 beds, in between its Jubilee Wing and the mental health unit.
Basildon Council’s planning department is set to make a decision in September.
It will be used during an ongoing multi-million pound project to refurbish existing wards in the main hospital.
If approved it is likely to be in place until February next year when the works are completed.
Jenny Galpin, director of estates and facilities at the hospital, said: “The ward will provide extra temporary capacity so we can continue our ward refurbishment programme.
“We have already spent £1million completely re-fitting and re-modelling two wards Elizabeth Fry and Frank Ahrens. “We want to do the same to all of the original hospital wards over the next few years. “This temporary ward will allow us to relocate wards so we can carry out a planned programme.”
