Priory Park society celebrates road victory

MEMBERS of the Priory Park Preservation Society have celebrated their successful campaign to stop Priory Crescent being widened.

The society held its annual meeting where chairman Peter Walker paid tribute to the hard work of campaigners.

He said: “The residents of Camp Bling were heroes.

“Their efforts saved the taxpayers of this country more than £25million the council would have wasted on this road.

“More importantly, they saved Priory Park for future generations of Southend residents to enjoy.”

In spite of the society’s victory, it was decided not to wind up the organisation.

The meeting also discussed the future of the Saxon king’s remains. Members decided their preferred option was to remove the council depot from Priory Park and to obtain funding for a purpose-built museum.

The society wants the museum near the park and not at the cliffs on Southend seafront, where Southend Council wants it to be built.

Yes. Hats off to the Camp Blingers! In a world where apathy rules they stood up and were counted.

Saving the Saxon King's burial site and Priory Park from disappearing under an unnecessary road was victory enough. However, the whole episode also managed to highlight Anna Waite's rank hypocrisy, which made victory even sweeter! First she was adamant this road was essential and MUST be built, then when it was clear she was going to lose she came out saying this site must be preserved and returned to its former glory for future generations to enjoy. Rank. Hypocrisy.

Well done to all involved with Camp Bling over the past four years or so.

This is excellent news and congratulations to all involved!

This hugely expensive project would have seen traffic jams move a mile further up the road and little else

Peak oil will see motoring become increasingly expensive once this recession runs its course. Public monies shouldn't be used for white elephants such as new roads and carparks

Does anyone campaining against this road have to use it during the afternoon rush hour? Most of the time you could walk faster! This road development WOULD have made a big difference & now thanks to the camp blingers we have to sit in worsening traffic every afternoon causing unneccessacy stress and wasting time!

If, as R85 suggests, it is quicker to walk, perhaps (s)he should, in fact, walk.

Not possible if you regularly commute from Wickford, nowhere near a train station and have no usable/reliable bus service and so must drive! Over half the afternoon journey time is spent exiting Southend! Something needs to be done about congestion in Southend. There are too many cars for the current roads to handle during peak hours!

Have you considered cycling to Wickford? Or taking your bike on the train? I'm 55, overweight and arthritic and I can cycle from Central Southend to Wickford in under an hour.
